Hello all, longtime forum lurker, first time poster.

I do share the opinion that the premium being tacked on to the 8800gt cards is starting to get out of hand, but have resigned myself to knowing it's what merchants are commanding based on popularity of the card.

That being said, I was fortunate enough to advance order EVGA's KO version (GPU overclocked to 675 mhz) from Amazon right as the initial runs had sold out on Newegg, et al. Amazon had been selling this version for $280 (it's since gone up to $310 on their site) but listed expected arrival to be in January. Things changed while i was out apparently, since I got notice my order had shipped last week and was at my front door when I got back home today.

It would appear that nvidia will sell zero of the GTX now that the GT is available. While the $199 initial pricing would have been a hit for consumers, the actually $300+ price makes the HD3870 the obvious choice.

I picked up one from Dell recently for $208. And no I don't care that I have to wait until 12/12 as it a Christmas gift anyway.

Those who have to have it NOW will always overpay.

As usual I will wait for the xmas craze to be gone. So nice of christians to help all the IT biz ecosystem stay afloat by paying through their noses. :)

Nvidia knew this card would sell like hotcakes, yet didn't supply anywhere near what the demand would be. That just kills me. They could have made 5 times as many chips as they did and easily sold every one. At least by the time I choose to upgrade, they'll probably be below today's MSRP anyway. I think I need a new PSU before anything else.

It is annoying that posters claim that Newegg and other e-tailers are "ripping-off" customers.

They clearly never took economics 101 or have a grasp on how the free market works.

There is only a limited amount of 8800GTs available for the market to get and there is a lot of buyers (Demand) who want it. The sellers are going to try to increase the price in order to prevent their supplies from drying up too quickly. The seller ends up a greater profit as a side-effect. The market still has more then enough buyers who are willing to pay for 8800GT despite price increases.

It will continue until it reaches a point where there are not enough buyers that are willing to accept the new price. The supply and later prices will start to stabilize.

$100 over Nvidia's quoted price. These etailers are making a killing. Must be making 50% markup.

Shipping + tax costs can be deciding factors when you are looking for the lowest price. California folks have to pay the 8.25% state tax when shopping at Newegg which can be avoided if you shop at Amazon or TigerDirect.

If the 8800GT can barely play Crysis, why is everyone tripping all over themselves to get one? Isn't next gen right around the corner? I don't get it.

Tech Report ... You guys are great. It seems like you put this up for me personally, and it's not the first time. Thank you.

I'm going to try to wait for the price drop, but this is for a new build (Christmas present) and will have to buy soon. When I buy it will be from Newegg (I know I'll get it) stock.

When nvidia announced plans to release a board with GTX-ish performance for $100+ less than the price of the GTX, retailers and etailers and board partners with significant inventories of the G80-based were in for a hosing. Bad timing all around, either because the channel overbought, or nvidia overstuffed it, or both.

My guess is the current 8800GT pricing will remain high and the inventories low until G80-based retail inventories have been whittled down a bit. I'm sure nvidia would like to flood the market with 8800GTs, but they need to protect their partners.

This is really a shame a 512mb GT was meant to be from 199 -> 249$! :(

I recall in the first few days, I saw them as low as 229$ US.

I'm simply waiting for the first 1-2 weeks of December, since one of the older shortbreads contained a link with information on an nVidia conference.

They promised to start ramping up production rates drastically by December, and claimed they would also set prices within the MSRP boundaries.

I'll see if I can get this christmas present at a normal price then. ;}

everyone remember the 8800GT 50% markup next time you feel the need to hype up neweggs name, ranting on just how different they are.

supply and demand? then why can dell sell at $100 less than the competition w/o any coupons?

hype = raise the prices = bullshit company(s)

I'd just like to give some big kudos to TR for this featurette. One of the reasons TR is among the best tech sites is that they're constantly thinking of their readers. Bravo!

hmm I'm limited to 16x10 so I think I'll wait for the 256MB considering it performs the same at probably a lower price http://en.expreview.com/?p=64 besides I don't have any time right now to use it.

today, i walked around Futureshop for dvds, strolled by the video card section and saw a evga 8800GT (the gold color stands out) on the bottom shelve by itself in the corner - no price tag, not even on the website.

grabbed it, paid for it. 309.99CAD. I will look forward to price matching it in the next 30 days during xmas sales at futureshop. =)
