the best way to prevent damage is by *not* buying one

MS isn't really even trying. It can't be that hard to fix a bad design during a few years.

The insider says the best way to avoid the "red ring of death" is to keep the console vertical and well-ventilated, because many failures are heat-related.
Heh, the two systems I had barf on me were in the vertical position. The first one ran for 9 months horizontally & croaked after I switched it to a vertical orientation. My replacement died after 90 minutes of watching Comedy Central in a vertical configuration... Killer stand-up? ;) Third one was back to horizontal & has been running great since September with literally hundreds of hours of Mass Effect played on it... Curse you BioWare!! |

Design/Manufacture issues aside, I'd like to add that deciding to stick with the then-tired DVD format definitely sacraficed future-proof for launch date. It will be nigh impossible for any id Tech 5 based game to be restricted to just 9-14GB of disc space without significant compromises. If you ask me, they should've shown Toshiba some love and just integrated the HD DVD player instead.

MS knew they needed to beat Sony to the market. That's not an excuse for manufacturing shortcuts however. MS took a calculated risk. Agree or disagree but on balance I'd say they succeeded. (17M consoles sold is no small achievement)
Overall the 360 is much better platform on the software side (games, the Dashboard, Xbox Live Arcade/Marketplace, etc.) But from the hardware side PS3 wins. I have both consoles and the PS3 is built more solidly. It's MUCH quieter, and has an internal power supply instead of the "brick" the 360 comes with. That said, I still play my 360 a lot more because Xbox Live is great. It's easy to organize games, chat, and compare gamercards, achievements and all the cool stuff Live has. I don't think people realize how robust and how big a part Xbox Live plays in the success of the 360 until they actually own a 360. The Playstation Network doesn't even come close to touching Xbox Live. |

If there is one thing we've learned from the tech world since the 90s: it's not being THE FIRST to market (see N64), it's about executing a plan to bring people into the ecosystem.

Zzz.. Old news. Most analysts predicted at launch that MS rushed the 360 just so it could launch a year before the PS3.

I have had my first XBOX 360 for under a year before I got the "Red Ring of Death". They replaced it without a hustle free of charge of course. Microsoft is not perfect but I have to admit given quality of gaming and price it is a very good deal.

Had an early 360 give me the red ring of death, had it replaced for free and no more problems since. My WII has performed perfectly since purchased, I'm happy with both.

You need to correct your article the failure rate of launch consoles was high around 30% and its less than 10% today with the new internal design.

As if that wasn't completely obvious by now.
