GDDR4 will definitely make a difference with AA and high resolutions.
X2 perform faster than crossfire period. With the new gddr4 it would beat 2 crossfired 3870's by 10-20% clock for clock. |

;o} Tweaktown benchmarks show the 3870-X2 with its 1800mhz RAM out-paces two 3870 in Crossfire with their 2250mhz RAM. The MSI 3870-X2 enjoyed an 11% core advantage but the two 3870's had the extra 25% memory bandwidth. So 3870-X2 with GDDR4 is surely just a numbers game (8400GS_1GB anyone?) and is unlikely to bring perf gains to 3870-X2, it simply doesn't need the bandwidth. It's probably to prevent people from feeling they're making a compromise by going with a 3870-X2 with slower memory than the regular 3870.
