Whats new here? We all know AMD doesnt' have a CPU that competes with Core 2! What matters is that the graphics performance will be excellent. I have no problem plugging in a laptop that can play modern games at moderate settings.

I guess the question is does a more sophisticated IGP really matter? I think most folks are quite happy with GMA900-esque stuff, honestly. GMA950 can handle annoying Aero fine. It's cool that it is better, but the vast majority of people aren't going to notice.

The IGP advantage is going to be smaller this time around because Intel is going to implement full 1080p decode acceleration in its next graphics core. This means AMD will no longer have an edge with the UVD engine as it has today on the desktop (when users talk 780G vs. G33, G35).

I'd think fudzilla or the inq would be a more reputable source, especially when it comes to cpu information...

I have seen the Puma platform up against a Centrino and the ATI platform walked all over the Intel platform video wise. I think it was running Prey and the ATI system was playing at a much higher FPS then the Intel slideshow.

ok...how does this make sense?? how does AMD create a K8 CPU with 3 voltage planes and end up with HIGHER power consumption?

Luckily for AMD, the alleged strength of Puma's 780-series integrated chipset could be an asset. AMD reportedly harnessed TSMC's latest production line in order to make the mobile 780 as power-efficient as possible, and the chipset's graphics core is expected to significantly outperform Intel's next mobile IGP.
Seems as if nVidia's imminent MCP79 <single-chip> family of integrated-graphics motherboard offerings for Intel-CPU mobile PCs might just quickly wipe out this claimed advantage. See:- http://www.dailytech.com/NVIDIA+Prepares+Singlechip+Mobile+Platform... Poor AMD. With Intel on one side and nVidia on the other, it must feel like being in a vice with the jaws inexorably closing. |

Wasn't Puma the name of OS X 10.1 ?!
WOW, AMD is now recycling code names from Apple.. a new low for them. Adi |

Perhaps they will refresh it with a 45nm Kuma. Fusion is set to be a Phenom dual core at 45nm. if Griffin is perhaps a little faster than Turion, then it will be more than enough for any users. Single Turions have been in gaming platforms.
I am typing this on a 1.6GHz Turion which is very nice. Most people who take their laptops even for business will plug in wherever they can so battery life isn't going to be that much of a problem. Also, I saw tests of HalfLife 2 where Puma was 3X faster in a time demo at 1024. If we're talking desktop replacement battery life has no meaning since they will have M88 XFire for Puma. And then, how many people really use CineBench or XVid on a laptop? Probably very few so I think Office\Productivity apps will not be able to tell the difference between Griffin and Penryn. |

"Rumor: Next AMD mobile chips to be slow, power-hungry" ?
Geez anything more catchy? Seriously if I want rumors I go to Fudzilla or whatnot not TechReport.. But anyway on the top of my head this new CPU will be based on K8 with the power saving tricks from K10 so I don't see how it could be: - much better than K8 performance wise - worse off than K8 consumption wise Plus on the whole the platform is likely to be quite seductive as the 780G is on the desktop (low power, high GPU performance). |

Man I am tired of seeing AMD launch uncompetitive CPUs. I'm also just plain tired anyway - slept awful last night. Thesis stress FTL.

Intel probably spend more on R&D for mobile CPUs than AMD have to spend on everything, so this should be no great shock.
