$7 is very little money but I still wouldn't feel right dishing out anything to run 3DM. Too bad, past 3DM were at least good shows the first few runs and were useful oc stability tests. Do the pay versions at least give you access to full manipulation like resolution and AA settings? If not there's absolutely no way I'd pay for it.

Single-use trial per machine, and $495 for the developer-class license, is insane. That's the cost of an Office'07 Pro license, which you can try out for sixty days and which is far more useful than a one-off graphics benchmark. Even AutoDesk will let you try out AutoCad'09 for thirty days.

I dont see how you're supposed to use 3DMark Vantage for profit ... unless they mean they're giving you their source code to their seemingly amazing engine for $495. That'd be pretty cool. I knew lock-free AI multithreading was possible, but this is still very cool.
Edit: oh, now I see, the magazines and websites that use Vantage have to pay $495. No source code is available. Futuremark is just trying to extract as much money as possible from its clients. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), I use XP, so I cant run it anyway. |

Futuremark has officially shot themselves in the foot. If they keep this up. I expect them to die a quick, painful death.
I cannot honestly see any of the hardcore overclockers ponying up even $4.95 for basic version. $495 for professional version's non-profit use is purely madness. I rather get a server OS license that can handle at least 16-32 clients for that price. |

Folks running 3DMark Vantage for non-profit use will have to pay up $495 "per seat" for the Professional Edition.
That has to be a typo. |

In the computer industry, there are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and benchmarks.

hmm i guess they're trying to see how few of people they can get to use the software.
and i'm one of the "software is software" people who defended "synthetic" benchmarks. charging for a trial is a little silly. or course.. dx10 only also leaves out people like me who dont plan to change O/Ss till windows 7.. and the only reason I'm staying with MS at all is because its my job... and with all the bad things MS does.. they make nice development stuff. hmm.. funny how this turned into an anti-ms rant. yay! |

Whoever pays that for graphics cards e-penis benchmarks needs to urgently check his own mental health.

New record reached
While Crysis has held the inverse performance crown for long, we can now declare that 3DMark Vantage provides the officially slowest 3D rendering possible, if we take into account the level of detail shown compared to framerate. Crysis frequently runs faster and frequently looks better. Fear not, this should mean it's a very good benchmark for comparing videocard performance stats. |

Unreal 3 powered games are more relevant as benchmarks since so many PC/XBox360 games use it. Theres no reason any home user should have to buy a Basic version. There are a few hardcore overclockers that use 3DMark06 to prove claims but other than that it is useless. I would rather have an Unreal 3 timedemo or just use Crysis's free benchmarks to test CPU and GPU performance.
Also its a shame ATI and Nvidia actually spend the time to make drivers for this. We need the drivers to work in the damn games we play, not some benchmark that doesn't use a game engine anybody uses. How about ATI fix their World in Conflict performance and Nvidia actually debug their drivers for once? |

I couldn't resist, got the following email and took advantage of it. Can't wait to get home and see how it runs on my x48 CF setup, although I can only image how it will bring it to a crawl.
We have released our latest 3DMarkĀ® Benchmark: 3DMarkĀ® Vantage for Windows Vistaā¢. As a current 3DMark06 user, we would like to let you know you may purchase the upgrade version of 3DMark Vantage for a discounted price of $15 (download version): |
