Adisor19, Apple did try the whole Mac Clone thing about 14 years ago. It did not work; Steve Jobs killed that when he returned after Apple acquired Next back in 1997. I would like Apple to make OSX available for generic PCs simply because I can build an equal or superior PC for OSX at a lower cost (a la Psystar or a Hackintosh OSX86). The thing is is that Steve Jobs will NEVER allow that to happen simply because his whole business model is that OSX comes with your Mac, or iPhone, or soon a whole lot of other Apple devices as a single unit, much like how personal computers used to be about 30 years ago (pre-IBM PC).
WaltC, you are right that MacIntels are not the countercultural computers they were in the PPC era. Having said that, it is still better that Steve made that choice to switch to Intel and have OSX eventually shed PPC support. In fact, that is easily the most important change Apple has made (other than ditching OS9 for OSX). The reason I am a fan (from afar) is simply because a MacIntel provides the flexibility of allowing Windows XP or Vista to be installed without the penalty of a second PC for just Windows. It also allows anyone to transition to Mac from Windows more easily, especially since for every app that exists for Mac, there are hundreds for Windows for obvious reasons. I am glad that Apple is now doing so well today, especially since it was only 10 or 11 years ago that Apple was going the way of the dodo bird. Imagine no Apple at all; all Windows all the time instead. The only options for an alternate OS are the likes of Linux, which is even more hobbyist than Mac ever was (excluding servers, where Linux variants are thriving). |
