Well, I've e-mailed Dell, we'll see what happens. I'm definitely going to let them know this is not cool, no pun intended.

Basically, if Dell is issuing a firmware fix for all notebooks with the Nvidia chips that are know to have issue, then that supports the possibility that the problem goes beyond the scope of what Nvidia has admitted to.

Dell didn't issue a firmware fix for all notebooks with the NVIDIA chips.

For instance my 1720 with 8600M GT did not receive a firmware update.

Heh, I have a Latitude D630 that I updated the BIOS on a few weeks ago to the new version, I guess I haven't noticed much change, but this thing sits on my desk all day with a fan/platform underneath it.

What with the poor market response to NVidia's new graphics cards, vendors abandoning ship and now this...they must be feeling under siege right now.
Luckily they have a large group of green goggle wearers to tide them through these tough times I suppose.

Regarding users updating their firmware: if any of the consumer users are running the DellSupport software, it'll tell them "you have a new patch to install! it's pretty urgent!"

now i'm kind of regretting uninstalling that from my parents' computer....

An M1330 I had delivered the other day has this new BIOS version and runs it's fan at a low speed continually, so presumably this is what these updates do on all of these laptops.

Sod this - I'd rather have NVidia change the chip when it dies than have the fan running more often and reducing battery life. If it dies outside the 3 years then it's no great loss anyway.

I was about to buy the M1330 with the Nvidia chip, but this changes everything... One of the good things about that laptop was its fan (silent, would not run for lengthy periods) - this sucks.

Better safe than sorry, I guess - although I somehow doubt many current users will actually update their firmware.

lol this isn't gonna do anything but prolong the timebefore failure so that most of the chips are out of any standard 1 year warranty.............
