You can get a 4870 for ~240 with MIR if you check out the deal sites. A much better deal.

I just bought and returned a 4870. There were graphical glitches in Lord of the Rings Online.
I hear there are similar issues in the Catalyst drivers with other games, and so I'm surprised that none of this gets mentioned in reviews. Everyone's just gushing over the R700, but the truth seems to be that nVidia's drivers are more mature and error-free. |

The GTX260 never beats the 280 but both the 4850 and the 4870 do in various titles.
Still its a pretty good card at its new low price....under $250 is killer after NVidia tried to shaft all their fans by charging $400 for it. |

The ATI cards have much better Linux support. (Gasp, how long has it been to be able to say that?!) Outside of that, I think it's a very cool tossup between green and red.
About the only over-the-horizon tech that one might support over the other might be some of the physics stuff, but until it's here, it's all speculation. |

I wonder if nv is still making a profit off the 260 at $270. Considering that it launched at $400, it would have meant an obscene amount of price gouging if they are...

For roughly the same price I'd have to say the 4870 is a better buy. It performs at least as well most of the time and outperforms the GTX260 some of the time, and occasionally by a lot.

Quite odd that prices over there (US) are pretty much the same for both the GTX260 and 4870. Over here (the Netherlands) prices are lower for the 4870 than for the GTX260 cards, so then your choice is quite easy to make I guess. Prices for the 4870 are around €220-230 while the GTX260 are around €250-260 (all including tax/VAT), when looking at respectable retailers and brands.

the Mail In Rebate wars are still favoring the 4870 by several dollars and it's faster..... a tough combo to beat.
then the presence of the 4850 for $100 less is a slam dunk.... slower than both the 260 and 4870 but not enough to warrant concern while the monetary difference is making it quite the monster.
