This is hardly new news, see my post over on Hardforum: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1309823&page=2.
The D945GCLF2, with a dual core Intel Atom, has been available for almost 2 weeks. |

2 Atoms merged together? Maybe they're trying to beat AMD to the punch and will name it Fusion!

Does this make any sense? The whole purpose of atom is for low cost/power computing. Doubling the number of dies and almost doubling power consumption seems counterproductive for the tasks Atom will be tasked with.

This can only make sense in the short term as indeed the power evellope will double. Intel will prolly spin a new Atom chip with a true dual core design.

They will introduce a more power efficient chipset to go along with the next gen atoms. The power savings from the new chipset will more than offset the additional power of another core.

I would rather prefer a single-die solution with shared L2 cache, just like Core design. Probably that way it can be more efficient in power management and overall performance per thread.
By the way, what happens when two atoms come together -- a molecule. :D Sounds like a goofy name for the new Atom. ;) |

Gotta love the Tranquil PC page that doesn't show anything but a background image with javascript disabled... What were they thinking?
Nevermind, network failure. Please delete. |
