Soooo...8600GT -> 9500GT -> G100, and they're all the same card. Nice.

NVs product lineyup is a hideous sight to behold with way to much renaming. At least ATi tends to keep things consistent within a series of GPUs and mostly keeps them based upon the same architecture, I know there are some older examples from the low end that are rehashes though but they don't do it wholesale to 3/4 of their lineup. The other thing that bothers me about NVs renaming is it can mean fewer driver updates for the 'old' cards even though they are jsut a BIOS flash from being 'new' ones.
On the other hand clearly differentiating the 55nm versions is a good thing for us *shudders at saying NVs naming scheme is a good thing* |

nVIDIA’s marketing drones seem to have been having problems with the packaging material of their brains overheating with the result that their performance has degraded. I expect nVIDIA will make an announcement confirming this sometime in H2 2009.

"By the end of 2008, Nvidia will be offering today's 9000 series as G100, GT120, GT130, GT140 and GT150 models."
Should the G100 be GT100? It's getting to the point where I'm not sure if this is a misprint or just part of Nvidia's utterly logical naming "strategy". |

55nm GeForce 8-series cards to get new names
Fixed that for 'ya. :) So, does this mean, yet again, that SLI won't work with two identical cards, just because their name got changed in firmware? |

Does that mean we can collectively ignore all cards that aren't GT1x0 or GT2x0 from NVIDIA now because the morass of codenames is unmanageable and incomprehensible without a serious bit of internet technology site browsing.

Okay, if they'd called the 8800GT the 9800GT to begin with, it would have been fine. But once you decide to call it an 8800GT, if that weren't confusing enough, then adding 9800GT as a secondary name for the chip is worse, not better.
Same thing again -- if they'd called the 55nm G92's GT100 to begin with, that would have been fine. Calling both the 55nm and 65nm ones 9800GT was confusing. But now that there are 55nm 9800's floating around, adding GT100 as a secondary name is worse than if they'd just stuck with the 9800 moniker. At least it sounds like we'll be guaranteed to get a 55nm one now, instead of having to guess. So maybe there's an upside here? |

How many different times can you rename the 8800GT? It's a contest!
Don't look away, they'll change it again! Wait, now it's the GTX220! |

ATI Radeon 9200, 9250, 9500, 9550, 9600, 9700, 9800
versus
Nvidia GeForce 9400, 9500, 9600, 9800
and all with abbreviations like GT, GX, GTX, XT, GS and GSO in their names. It may not confuse the enthusiast but I can see how sales&distribution may dislike it.
