Actually a GPGPU can accelerate properly coded anti-virus programs... and there are many other applications for GPGPUs..

Could they???? How stupid are people? Windows 7 is Vista SP2. Yeah I have no doubt that they could easily pump out another service pack by mid 2009. Which would be about the right timing, (18 months) between service packs.

Same Shit different day.

Windows 7 = Vista SP2 or Vista R2.

Change the name, finally finish moving all of the dialog boxes and UI stuff from XP to Vista, drop un-used pieces like Mail, and Calender, push the Live versions.

Pray people dont notice and love it. This is the real Mohave.

If Microsoft followed the same pace/change for 7 as they did for XP, wouldn't that make it Windows 6.1?

I hope that when they release 7, it will only be one or two versions (64-bit only).

So will Windows 7 make use of OpenCL to accelerate non games, non graphical applications? Anti virus, compression and encryption ?

That's probably where AMD puts its hope in - so that their Fusion CPUs get an advantage compared Intel, at least until Larrabee arrives. But then why not add a second discrete AMD or nvidia GPU to your Intel CPU.

Current rumors indicate that it will launch in the same fashion as Vista. That means open beta's and such in Q2 of 2009, Release Candidates in Q3 of 2009 and availability to businesses in Q4 of 2009. Retail availability should follow in Q1 of 2010.
DirectX 11 on the other hand will probably be released around or just after summer 2009 and will thereby first appear as an update on Vista and Windows 7 will have it by default.

If DX 11 is coming next summer, i am not going to purchase any new card now. My next buy will be DX:11 card. Period.

Best way to change people's opinion on Windows Vista is to introduce "Windows 7" and sweep Vista under the carpet.
