Has anyone checked out the guidelines for building this software.

Only Ubuntu and Mac OS are officially supported.

Way to go there google and associated android developers, you provide this awesome potential for a mobile phone stack and truly open competition, and then ensure it will never get off the ground by guaranteeing that 90% of the PC world will never get around to even building the software.

I wonder if I'd be able to update the software on the G1, after compiling my own Android package.

You should be able to since: The G1 is a dual-band HSDPA (1700/2100) and quad-band GSM device.
