Actually, W7 won't be any improvement to Vista. Only, it's launched so much after Vista's launch date, that of course hardware specifications can be met now. Not because W7 kept possible hardware problems in mind, but because the other manufactures kept Vista in mind.
So, the so called "improvement" is completely false.

I think Vista Refreshed would have been a better recieved name for the "new" OS....

MS gives a stage demonstration of a new product, and lots of people start to sing jubilee, without ever have gotten their hands on it.
Don't you think that's at least a bit suspicious?

All I can think of when I see that image is "developers developers..."

W7's interface looks a fair bit better than vista's. It will be especially interesting to see if this leads to any kind of productivity boost, or if it will just be a case of your computer being "nicer" to work with.

Anyone see any information on multiple monitor support? Are they doing anything to enhance it? I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it in Vista, but there's always room to grow. I've read most of the reviews out there and haven't seen any mention of it. There is a new feature for connection external displays to a laptop better, but nothing on dual monitor setups.

Also, i'm hoping they will have some sort of Windows 7 Special Upgrade edition for Vista users like they did for Windows ME to Win98SE users. They had a special upgrade to Windows ME if you had Windows 98SE. It only cost $50. Not getting into a discussion on ME, just saying that they've done it in the past, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that they could do something like that again.

Looks like an improvement, but still sad you will have to PAY for this. Anyone else notice the number of Service Packs released for each version of Windows OS is going down? NT4 = 6, 2000 = 4, XP=3, Vista = probably SP2, all part of their plan to eventually start charging for Service Packs. Like Apple. /dons flame retardant suit. Seriously, though, the way Windows is marketed, the solution to all your problems, issues, whatever has been to give Microsoft more money. Sure you can wait for the fix or service pack... OR get the latest version which will make everything perfect and make all your wildest dreams come true.

Gotta admit... REALLY not diggin the new task bar. I very much like my wordy 95ish task bar. Hopefully there will be a setting i can change to make my taskbar more like the one that is in Vista. Aero, but still with words. Don't really like the whole idea of having nothing but a bunch of damn symbols.

As long as they fix many of the issues vista has i am sure it will be a better OS. Unless they take away my precious DOS prompt. I might actually die if that happens. Not sure if it's true or not, but i heard MS was thinking about taking DOS away from us, and everyone complained so bad that they decided against it.

Edit: Like i said... no actual confirmation on this, but it's just what i heard.

So I haven't read all 110 posts before mine, yet. But all I have to say is this offers little more functionality than my XP. Using programs like ObjectDock (or Rocket, RK, Y'z), WinFlip, Allsnap, QTTabBar, along with a few others - offers up almost the same (if not more) functionality. I could care less about snazzy fade and dissolve transitions for a window; I set my theme to classic anyway. But I still get live previews of every picture with Xentient Thumbs and QT.

There are some cool features like the "jump list", but I don't see why that couldn't be implemented in older Win OS's as well. All and all I don't see a whole lot to get excited about. I'm sure the breadcrumbs aren't as good as the ones in QTAddressbar, and I'm sure using Launchy and Objectdock is overall more effective than their new gimmicky start menu.

And is it just me, or does holding control and using your scroll wheel make a lot more sense (and take less energy) than lifting your hands off of your input devices and making retarded gestures with your fingers all over the screen?

I'll admit, touch screens do have some reasonable applications in the real world. I just don't think being used as everyday general input devices on a major OS is one of them...

It seems to me like power users are losing out with every new windows "development".

Indeed, I have to agree with one of you guys who wrote that it looks more productive. I looks a lot like KDE.

I am ROFLMAO!!!!! M$ is now coping KDE style. Someday, maybe they'll give us the choice to run real KDE or even Gnome... Hmm... That doen't sound like Windows anyway....

Believe me. The end for WIndows is nearer than you think.

I'm really interested in Windows 7. I'll probably put it on my secondary computer first when it comes out, find out all the bugs and quirks first, then migrate it over to my main PC. I just hope it doesn't have 4 different versions like Vista that we have to pick and choose features from.

"Windows 7 may not change much under the hood, but the extent of these interface changes makes it clear that this is very much a major release. "

Strange, I had the opposite reaction after seeing mostly minimal changes with how windows is used. Nothing in the ars preview really told me that Microsoft is thinking dramatically different about application control.

Appears to me like Microsoft is simply moving icons here and there and charging people money for the honor of doing so.

I think all those positive reactions are premature.
None of us has as yet really used W7. We have only seen some pictures and read the commentaries, which are released by M$ itself.
Current reactions are nothing but: "Nice packaging. I'll buy one."

Windows 7 does not deserve number 7 "suffix" it should be Windows 6.1 (Vista Second Edition), just like Windows 2000 ver. 5.0 into Windows XP 5.1 transition....

#1, Don't forget it still has all the features that Vista haters love to hate.

Oh, I can't wait to hear how they "fixed" everything that was broken in Vista and how Windows 7 is so great...people are friggin' stupid.

As long as they fix many of the issues vista has i am sure it will be a better OS. Unless they take away my precious DOS prompt. I might actually die if that happens. Not sure if it's true or not, but i heard MS was thinking about taking DOS away from us, and everyone complained so bad that they decided against it.

Case in point. ;o)

There's been no DOS in Windows since W2K; a CLI is not DOS.

Hm. So the desktop essentially becomes the Dashboard, and there's a hotkey to basically make all windows transparent.

I gotta hand it to Microsoft, they really outdid themselves. They're really embracing UI-transparency effects while Apple keeps waffling back and forth on OS X Leopard. It's really frustrating.

I have no problems with Vista
I've seen no performance problems, memory hogging, or such said interference with any of my tasks in Vista
I had no problems with XP
I think MS should concentrate more on making what they have out better, not releaseing new stuff. All I want is internet and newest game support, I'm tired of having to continue to pay to get those two simple things.
Also whats up with DX10 not being out for that long, and all the sudden we hear about DX11 with W7 =/
Ugh.

Thank goodness they didn't listen to any of the whining of Abrasion or Adisor.

I love the upcoming interface, though it'll take a few minutes to familiarize myself with the new taskbar. I hope I can enable Quick Launch on it.
