What would be the scientific interest of a manned mission to Mars ("except" solving the huge problems to get there and back and learn from that)? I'm more excited for the James Webb Space Telescope, can't wait for those great wallpapers!

The sooner we spread humanity to more places than this one rock, the more likely we survive our first major "misunderstanding" with fusion bombs.

Abundant and readily reachable water goes a long way to ensuring that man can live there for some appreciable time absent deliveries from home.

So, we go to Mars, process some oxygen to breathe and hydrogen to fuel our cells, and then come back home.
