So let's put together a non-Atom alternative. To match the form factor we have to go mini ITX. How about:
Athlon X2 4850e Dual-Core (45W): $57 [1]
Jetway JNC62K mobo (GeForce 8200 Chipset): $139 [2]
Jetway JC-104 Mini-ITX Enclosure w/100w PSU: $89.95 [3]
2GB DDR2: ~$25
HD: ~$50 (can use a desktop drive with this case, but might want a laptop drive to keep power use down).

Total: $360.95 (not including keyboard or mouse).

As a bonus, the enclosure can accept a low-profile (laptop-style) optical drive too.

I'd be a little concerned about total power use. Maybe one of the 35W chips, or even a Turion, would be better (albeit more expensive).

To match perfectly you'd want something like this but the PSU wouldn't cut it:

Atom is a POS for the desktop. I understand the appeal for a netbook but for a real computer, especially for Vista, do you want such a weak CPU? I understand that with an ATI 4xxx card, hardware accelerated video only uses 1-5% CPU power but you want to be able to do other things too like PVR, etc.

So is it routed over PCI? I was under the impression that you didn't have pci-e on the atom boards.

This needs dual core. Then it would be fully awesome.

How is this possibly cheaper than an using an AMD CPU and a 780G?

In cheap laptops it makes sense to use atom as its good on power and cheap. With a desktop though it would make much more sense to go for something a little faster since power is not as much of an issue.

I'll pass. My Aopen mini PC can do a much better job at any of these tasks than this EEE clunker.

Make it a dual-core atom, 10.2" LED Backlit display, slim design, long lasting battery life + the HD 3400, then I'll buy.

Ooh the perfect netbook, where art thou?

Edit: oops, its an Eee Box. Never mind. I like my Eee next to my Wii. Kiddy naming scheme sucks.
