The NY Times Blu-ray article touched on some good points.

1. The increase in picture quality from DVD to Blu-ray is subtle, unlike the VHS to DVD move, which does not justify Blu-ray for some folks.

2. With the price of Blu-ray movies still hanging around 25 to 30 dollars, Blu-ray seems to be reserved for newer, highly popular movies, like The Dark Knight and Wall-E. With older movies it is harder to justify the high prices. For example, I love Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but not for 40 dollars.

I am happy with my PS3 attached to my 40" 1080p LCD, but I can see how some folks would not see a reason to move up to Blu-ray just yet.

As for downloadable content, yes it's nice and convenient, but the quality of the picture depends on various factors, like available bandwidth and quality of the source material. Also, most HD channels are compressed, or run in 720 (at least in my area). Whether people notice or not, at least Blu-ray can be touted at the only source of 1080p content. So it's got that going for it.

Given the newegg sale and previous steam sale, perhaps the time to be buying hardware is directly after the enslaved Corp-Christians empty their bank accounts.
