God I love AMD these days.

The strategy of market share over profit is just awesome for us rabid consumerist.

I guess it would be way too much to expect from an enthusiast website, but I wish it were possible to talk about price/performance using a TCO type metric. The biggest cost associated with using a computer is the opportunity cost of the human's time. The (distant) second biggest cost is probably energy. Compared to those two things, the upfront cost of the CPU is miniscule.

The only people for whom the benchmark/$ metric is relevant is people who have little money but a lot of free time. I guess that would include students and the unemployed.

The 940 is now sold out- guess I wasn't the only person who used that coupon code.

Being in the market for a new PC, these prices are attractive. But I think I'll hold off on AMD CPUs until AMD works out the kinks in their southbridges, especially their AHCI / NCQ bugs.

Edit: Does anyone know if AMD's current 7xx southbridges support AHCI eSATA hot-swapping? Intel's southbridges do in hardware, but not in software. To use the hotswap ability of an Intel southbridge, you need to use the program HotSwap! which works great, BTW.

Thats nothing should have been around when the q6600, q8200 ,and q9300 got discontinued about the same time. they had a firesell on all three models trying to get rid of the remaining stock since they wouldn't be ordering any more. had the 6600 for $99, the 8200 also at $99 and the q9300 for $119. I tried to jump in on that myself but they were already sold out of all three by the time i found out and went up there.

No coupons or anything required... here it is for 189.99 @ zipzoomfly.com
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=1000984...

I checked the site earlier today (around 1pm or so) and the processor had an instant rebate of $85 with a final price of $165. That might have been a fluke, but someone had a great opportunity to get an excellent cpu for dirt cheap.

Those prices make my i7-920 feel inadequate, but I'll take my X58 chipset over anything AMD makes any day.

Not that AMD's chipsets are bad, but Intel's are just so GOOD!

Makes me long for those ancient Socket 7 days when you could choose chipsets and CPUs independently. A Phenom II on X58 would be a joygasm.

I'm not much on AMD's hardware lately but 169$ US for the 940 is pretty bloody good.

The savings you make on the CPU you could throw an excellent, quiet cooler at it and get some really decent performance out of that.

zipzoomfly lowered the price to 168.99 with free shipping. Someone please buy one and send it to me here in Canada.

I can confirm that the "AMD41420" code still works with the X4 940's lower price, because I just bought one for $169.99 :)

I need a new system, I was going to wait for the AM3 945, but I'm on a budget. Got to keep an eye on the bottom line.

nice but it was already even cheaper earlier($189) and then went back up to $214. zipzoomfly supposedly had the 940 for $169 but now its back up to $189 which is still cheaper than the current newegg deal even with the promo code. dame these deals come and go so fast.

damn I type too slow...

Couldn't we save Newegg deals until August or so? I need to wait until I've had a few weeks in my post-graduation job before I can upgrade. ;)
