Looks sorta like an Xbox... only slightly smaller.

Oh great, another $500 power supply. I can't wait to ignore it.

It's funny how the "silver" rated power supplies are just about universally ridiculously overpowered. Since it starts at 20% load, are they really that efficient when you're at idle levels, considering that would be such a small percentage? Big power supplies may be for high power computers, but all sorts of high power configurations wouldn't even idle at 100w.
Of course you don't need an 850w power supply for almost any computer now, but there's a disproportionate amount of overkill power supplies pushed onto the market, and higher efficiency is often their selling point. People clearly buy them. On Anandtech, they chart out efficiency across a range of load levels, and at lower points, it often drops quite a bit. Some are consistent, but most aren't. The higher ratings could be easily "abused" with bigger power supplies, already making them about as helpful as the "Energy Star qualified" tag. It's too bad they don't have requirements for 10%. I often wonder about what to use with lower power computers, as well. You're stuck buying 300-400w 80 plus power supplies at the low end, but even that is totally unnecessary for the average person's computer (I don't mean the average person here.) |

Any idea who makes the hardware? Xfx themselves, or is it someone like Seasonic?

Who needs 850W of power?

I have a Corsair 520HX and 850TX, the 520 is modular and I love it. If Corsair had a modular offering in the 750w-850w range, I would've snapped it up, but they have a big gap in their lineup (nothing modular between 620w and 1000w). Given this market opening and XFX's good build quality, if they can get it out the door in the $150US range, I'll bet this PSU will be a winner.

Well XFX has been a pretty darned good video card vendor. I'd imagine their foray into the PSU market will be somewhat successful. It is a pretty sweet looking PSU. However, I wish they released several models, particularly ones with lower wattage as 850W is an insane amount. I'd take a nice 500 of 550.

I like the nice big fan and the 80% plus efficiency, but as all the other comments before me have stated, it's just too big. Take these same specs and couple it with a 500 watt supply, you'd have a winner. Although that color scheme is UGLY. No way would I put that in my Sonata...even if you can't see it.

80+ silver is nice. Hopefully they're smart like Corsair and put out some quality low power units which are sufficient for the majority of PCs, these 800W+ PSUs should really be niche items.

Our source didn't share a price with us, but it did provide several images 3D renders—which you'll find in the gallery below.
