God help us if AMD starts advertising. Given the cost of advertising we could see their prices jump and quality drop just like Intel's.

I believe the p4 was rushed to market and Intel did not see the athlon coming!!!Most people still believe that intel is faster ...but I have an xp1800@1668=11.5x145 and I am very happy with it!!!
Im a little bias toward amd ill admit and thats cause they are beating the giant with a smaller stone!! listen If the intel chips were faster and lower priced then i would buy them!!! but i dont need a p4 so i can say hey i got a 2gig!! its simple logic....lower price higher performance=my dollar well spent!! ps-as for the overheating and fire if the heatsink comes of...i dont care cause i plan on leaving it on-what a concept and besides.....i like a little danger!! |

Uh, you realize that there is no such thing as a 'unbiased' review, especially when it comes down to paragraphs written about something other than black and white benchmark scores? IMO this is more like ppl running around calling people who sees Intel's cup half full biased because they themselves see it as half empty.

Ahem, getting back onto the subject, I did think that the CNET article wasn't particularly biased. It did like little good reporters should and drew on a few resourses, reviews, and used quotes from 'experts' and such. Not bad writing. I would theorize that having a report like that where Joe/Jane IT Manager would read it and say to themselves, "Hmmm, Athlon XP's are better for email and Word, eh? I think I'll buy 10 dozen." Good for AMD in that case. The article doesn't preclude that they actually read the quoted reviews entirely.
I did learn a few things about paid-for editorial biased through CGW and some of Loyd's choices, however. After that realization, I let the subscription expire and do my part to save some trees. BM Go Climb a HowTo |

Forge,
you forgot Socket 423 and Socket 478. 5:1, isn't that like the valuations of the two companies? Maybe AMD needs more Ssockets :) |

AG #67 -
Intel - Socket 370 (original Celeron) Socket 370 (Coppermine) Socket 370 (Tualatin) So many that Gigabyte made a special gimmick mobo with a blue socket so that buyers could know it took any Socket 370 CPU. I can't put a Coppermine on my BP6. I can't put a Tualatin on *any* mobo I own, even ones that are less than a year old. AMD - Socket A - Put my Palomino 1.2 in a Corona mobo the other day. That's the Tbird socket A AMD-760 prerelease board from a year or so ago, BTW. Original BIOS. Saw my CPU as an 'AMD {unknown} 900 Mhz', then at 1.2, once I kicked it to 133 bus. A friend has a Socket A AMD-750 board (I believe they're Compaq OEM items), and I could even run my AthlonMP on that all day, albeit only at 990 due to FSB limitations on AMD-750. Says something about AMD's commitment to keeping Socket A unchanged. Got to love a major CPU manufacturer that listens. |

65, how many heatsinks have you seen fall off their processors? Also, according to the specs on this gigabyte board:

Amen to that. The P4 could barely keep up with all of it's highest performing features going for it. Handicapped with an 845 and SDR SDRAM it would be totally embarassed.

Quite simply, the P4 would get it's ASS HANDED TO IT on a plate, with some tartare sauce... |

I have to wonder how much attitudes would change if the market looked more like this: Palomino 1.53GHz = $500 Pentium 4 2GHz = $140 [/quote] then i would be an intel fan boy, but the fact of the matter it is not that way. now time to sock away a few pennies to buy some of this new cool crap. |

[q]Yeah. For the time being, not that I care, since I'm not in the market for a new processor for the time being. It doesn't matter at all to me. But The double standard shown by people is ridiculous.[/q]
Eh? What double standard? Don't confuse relative performance versus clockspeed. A P4 2GHz runs at 2000MHz, period. The fact that its relative performance compared to a TBird 1.4 is identical doesn't mean Intel is using some sort of deceptive clock speed rating scheme. I have to wonder how much attitudes would change if the market looked more like this: Palomino 1.53GHz = $500 Pentium 4 2GHz = $140 |

why do people insist on spelling his name wrong? I'm the one who didn't know who he was but I'm the only one to correctly spell his name.. if you dont believe me look @ the bottom of his post here and look @ www.extremetech.com its Loyd Case it is NOT Lloyd Case |

LocalYokel,
Did you mean the SIS645? If so check out [H]ardOCP's reviews: http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/chipsets/sis/645/ http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/cpus/amd/1533xp/ Kyle tests it against the KA266A with a Thunderbird and an XP chip. And to AG# 36 who said: [qut I can't say I'm extremely happy about the 60C degrees this 1.4GHz produces -- idle.[q] Um...I run my Athlon 1.333GHz @ 1.466GHz and under full load (SETI@home) I average about 43C and I live in Hawaii. I'm using the new Alpha 8045 with a 80mm Delta fan. Maybe you should look into some better cooling solutions. |

Maybe CDW was intel-centric - i don't really remember. But a looong time ago, when I lived in Mexico City, CDW was my window into pc gaming, and I found Lloyd Case's technical articles very helpful when I was just getting started in the build-yer-own department. I think it's easy to forget that most people are neither as techno-savvy, nor do they want to be as techno-savvy, as many TR readers. For them, lloyd's articles are very helpful.
