My second Hitachi laptop HD is just starting to show bad blocks after 15 months. The laptop has been used as a Desktop (not moved, on about 16hrs a day). It was a replacement for the Hitachi drive that came with the machine. I'm not happy.

Well I hope I can recover my drive tomorrow...
I have a Deskstar ( I wonder why IBM gave it that ironic name ) DTLA-307030 75GXP, the 20 GB version. I've bought this drive on Ebay maybe an year ago. My drive is still operational, tought it makes that "zzzzzzzzzip" sound (not quite "click-of-death") every now and then. First of all, I have a utility called Sandra 2005. I was just about to look up for upgrades on my PC so I used Sandra to see what type of motherboard I had and all that crap. I noticed that when I ran the drives information icon, a warning appeared at the end of the page that said "Drive is not used in RAID mode... You hard drive can be working at higher speeds... To fix this, install the manufacturer's software..." So I went of to google and typed my HD name and I aded firmware in the back of it. Google gave me a page named "IBM SUCKS". When I opened it I read about how the drive crashes in RAID settings and all that. Well the information wasnt new for me since I read in PC World about the IBM Deskstar lawsuit. So I guess Im lucky that my PC is not runing my Deskstar in a RAID setting. Otherwise, I have the side panels of my PC removed so that my PC doesnt overheat. Also, Im planing on attaching a fan tomorrow and backing up my data before its too late. As for those of you who have not experienced the click of death with your Deskstars yet, there are a few tips that I can give you. First, when away from the computer for lets say over 30 minutes, always always always put it on Standby. Believe me, but that way my hard drives have never overheated. Another tip would be for those who have the drive formatted NTFS ---- I read somewhere that when the drive is runing too long, the heads catch the platters. Well Im not sure if this works, but in theory it should ( like the IMB Deskstar, Im kiding =D ). Go to "My Computer" and right-click your Deskstar HD. Make sure that "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching" is checked. That way, the next time WindwosXP starts, 2 new processes will start with Windows -- Cidaemon.exe and Cisvc.exe. When the computer is left idle, Cisvc is known to contol memory usage of Cidaemon, so basiacally, what should happen is that all of the time Cisvc would be reading your hard drive so that it rebuilds the index of Cidaemon. When Cisvc is reading, your Deskstar heads will be moving, making the drive less likely to crash. Theres a problem that comes with that tip thow -- usually the drive overheats bacause Cisvs is reading the HD all the the time while the PC is idle. Anyways, just a tought... As for me, I will not get any firmware or whatever else. My Deskstar is working okay. Well from time to time when reading a file, it makes that one click sounds and either power off or power on and start working again. Usually if I instantly power off the PC, the HD should start working normally after I turn it on again. So good luck to all of you who still have a Deskstar running. Just know that everything in life is delicate and may break at any moment. |

Yeah unplug the slave drive and everything will be OK. It's some type of microsoft application to kill off Linspire on Slave drives. Meaning Slave drives are history unless you put it behind the Secondary CD-ROM as a Slave Drive. Also I have no problems running a slave that is clean without any files as a Primary Slave either.

My Apple G4 came with a IC35L060AVER07-0 in it. I didn't know it until last night when I tried to install OSX 10.4 Tiger and the machine froze then clicked. Now the rom doesnt see it sometimes and when it does, it is reported as SMART telling me the drive is failing. GRRRR. Is that lawsuit still open for claims?

Jeez. I just had an 80 gig drive crap out on me. It was working two weeks ago, in a Firewire enclosure. I flipped it on yesterday, and the LED didn't flash. I assumed it was OK. I tried to use it in a computer today. No SPIN. Jeez. It's probably under warranty if I go in today.

Kientero, you could try putting your drive in a freezer bag, freezing it, and hooking it up to your computer while cold. *Sometimes* drives will be able to limp along while cold and let you pull data off of them. Best of luck. In the future, if your data matters that much, BACK IT UP. Hard drives tend to fail, regardless of make or model. Yes, some are worse than others but all are vulnerable.

*sigh* ok, it's been 2-3 years (or maybe longer) since i got IBM Deskstar from my dad. And now it suddently stopped functioning a week before xmas of 2004/2005.
And at first NOW I figure out that this is what (probally) happend with my harddrive. FUCK!, so now what am i supposed to do now. I have important-lifetime-lasting stuffs on that harddrive, how am i supposed to get them out of there? I've also checked in my country how much it cost to retreve the data from any harddrive cost 50/75 times more than it cost for a harddrive, and I think thats a waste of money. But I want the files that is on the harddisk, cause I'm stubborn. ;P Kientero (homeland, Norway) |

Im 16 and I think I have a problem with the IBM Deskstar 45gig hard-drive. When i boot up, after awhile (before windows starts) it says "Drive Not Ready, Please insert boot disk..." ect. So, I put in my system restore disk, press a key, tell it to boot from the hardrive and it works. This is a minor inconvieniance, but theres a bigger problem. When i tried to install Win 2k Pro on the computer, after copying it to my Hard drive, and running the setup from DOS, it comes to a error message saying "System Halt, Innaccessible Boot Device". I saw someone else had this same message come up, and im afraid that my drives might be dead (mind you i can still go into windows and put things on the hard drives and everything, just cant install windows 2000). My freind (much better with comps then me) agreed with my idea that it was a problem with the PCI card that connects the hard drives to my mother-board (which, trying to make them go directly into the motherboard just makes the "Start windows from: Hard drive - CD" message loop) Im hoping that with the new motherboard, it would get rid of this problem (making it so i can connect the hardrives into my motherboard dirrectly). Im thinking that its a lost cause though, seeing all these disgruntled people about the same HD i have...

Well add mine to the list. i bought mine in 2002 as part of a external kit. so its OEM, Its not covered by IBM, Hitaci tellls me to go back to the place i purchased it. this is the email i received from them:
"Because your drive was not sold through authorized distribution channels it does not carry a manufacturer's warranty. We apologize for any inconvenience." not sure what that means. So i went to the Royal computers.com, and they are no longer in business, or something. i dont know what thier story is. but they have an email address for people that purchased stuff before 2002. i emailed them my problem with the drive. on 2/24 and again today asking for help. i am not going to hold my breath. what do i do next. am i stuck with this lemon. its a shame. and i wish i had known about this problem earlier as the drive was acting up before it totally broke down. |

I've been running a a 45gb 75gxp for 3 years now ( maybe even longer ). Model number DTLA-307045. About 2 years of its life have been 24/7. About 8 months ago, it made the click of death sound, so I used ibms zero writing utility. It worked ok, then did it again. For a while it did it every time I moved the machine ( I go to lan parties often ). A few power cycles normally cured it. The last time it happened ( about 4 months ago now ), I cured it by dropping the pc from a height of about 6 inches. Its running as my primary drive, with heavy use, no problems at the moment. I also have a 120GXP, no problems with it even though it is the AVVA model.

I bought a 160GB hitachi last october and it started scratching a few weeks ago. I ran the hitachi diagnostics and it definately failed. I was able to get all the important stuff off I wanted. The next day and ever since it has been fine. Passes the diagnostic every time.
I sent a 120GB drive back to hitach once before because it was doing the knuckle shuffle. They sent it back saying it had a bent pin on it. Filthy SOBs. They probly did screwed it up them selves. No more hitachi/IBM for me. |

I had a horrible week. My main drive, an IBM Deskstar DTLA-307045, made in Thailand, from Nov 2000 (S/N YMMX6172) died on me on 18th of February 2004.
This happened about 2 months after the warranty expired. Given that you made such a bad experience with IBM/Hitachi's RMA process, I am not even sorry. I ordered a WD drive as a replacement. Not much unrecoverable data was lost (I was really, really lucky). The driver worked flawlessly for 3 years, under heavy usage, and died within 3 hours starting from the first screech and click noises. Unfortunately, I didn't react correctly. Instead shutting down immediately after the beginning of the noises, I let it run. This totally ruined my chances of recovering any data. After just 3 more hours, the drive was completely dead. Now, it prevents booting the computer: The BIOS just hangs, while the drive makes scary click and screech noises. This happened out of nowhere, without warning, and without interfering with the system. I can only recommend to any owner of an IBM drive manufactured 2000 or later, to make a backup immediately, and get a replacement drive. You can still use your IBM drive, but use it only as a temporary storage, which you wouldn't miss if it went away all of a sudden. Also, tell all your friends about it. I certainly wished somebody told me to check all my drives for this potential problem. Marcus from Germany |
