Disco #40 Total Concurrance regarding Half-life. That game rulez the FPS genre IMHO. The graphics and sound and suspense all made for a total immersion. Not saying that more recent titles haven't been fun too, but nothing, and I mean *nothing*, has touched HL yet. Lets hope that DoomIII can do it, I really want that experience again. Like Barney always says, "I just hope theres a beer waiting at the end of all this for us..."

Wonderful proof that most pirates are incapable of producing something of value themselves.

It's not pirating if ... <fill in the blank with your favorite reason>.
It is pirating if you are the creator and someone is making a copy of your creation without your permission. Check your reason above and explain why your reason is better than the creator's reason. |

Oh, and because no-one loses money on a leaked version, unlike a pirated game, in fact, if the game is good, then the leaked version will improve profits... anyways, enough rantings about philosophical crap, I'm tired, IntelMole |

its not pirating when theres no way to make money from it, and its not even a registered product.

How many people here have no problem playing a "leaked" version of Doom III, but will jump down the throats of anyone they suspect of pirating software or music?

disco - There are more than just the two zombies, even in just this alpha leak. I can think of three other models I saw, just off the top of my head... Figure in that the equivilent Quake3 test/leak had exactly one model, and it bodes well for variety.

I\'ve been replaying Half-life over the past month, and I have to say that that game is totally amazing! You forget about the details over the years, but I think it is still better than any other game I have played. Even though the graphics are somewhat dated - they aren\'t actually all that bad. And the details are amazing. You turn on some reactor in a level, and then all the maps on the walls are updated with lights indicating that the reactor is active - totally immersive. In spite of all the details, the game is also very long. I could go on and on about it, but I think that anyone who enjoys fps games should go back and dig their half-life disc off the shelf and try it again. The only strike against half-life is the overuse of certain models (ie keep meeting the same scientist over and over again!). Let\'s hope that Doom3 will avoid that same \'problem\' and not get too caught up in just the fancy effects. disco |

droopy1592, number one I was not flaming you. I am just sick of hearing people complain about alpha leaks and how this game (or any leaked alpha) is unimpressive. So you are unimpressed about the game play for the leaked alpha, well wow no kidding, there is a reason why this is called a ALPHA not final or even beta. Hell I am unimpressed with just about everything in the leak, even the graphics. All I am trying to say is that basing an opinion on a game that is unreleased is pretty pointless. It's like all the people who are doing benchmarks on the damn thing, POINTLESS. I know that you are entitled to your opinion, well so am I. If you think that I am flaming, well I guess you need to put on your flame resistant vest or something. bah

Since they can choose whether or not an alpha-transparency texture casts shadows (I believe, not 100% on that), it seems that for performance reasons they don't have things like the chain-link barrier in the first map casting shadows. Just a nitpick, but I demand full realism at the cost of performance, dammit.

doggy poop, I'm entitled to my opinion. It's not like I said it was a mound of shit. NO, I just said I was unimpressed. Alpha or no alpha, I'm not impressed. That's gameplay, when it comes to graphics, there's none better. Not being impressed doesn't mean it won't be a good game. I guess I'm not happy anymore unless I'm getting mowed down by someone or sniped from afar by someone sitting in their 9-year old leather office chair on their bedroom computer, or even if their armies aren't running over my newb team mate that didn't produce any troops.
I wasn't impressed by alphas for Doom3 or UT2k3, which both are/will be good games. The leaked a/b for warcraft was lovely, if unbalanced. Point is, graphics don't always make the game. When the game comes out and blows my mind with interactivity and realistic effects (that actually become a part of the game), my jaw will drop to the floor, but until then, I'm unimpressed. Just like music, there are a lot of crap games out these days, so I like to spend the cash on the really good ones. Wait for my final impression once the game is released, then flame. |

I like it. It's pretty. :)
Seriously, though, those shadows are holy Moses hot stuff. EVERYTHING casts a shadow, and ANYTHING's shadow can interact with ANY surface!!! That's a whole Hell of a lot of calculation! The bumpmapping is very pretty, too, but those shadows are what get me going. Coldfirex - Wow, hadn't even noticed that. I wonder if we can compress them.... |

Forge, Valium eaten much better now. I was just commenting on your unoptimized sound engine comment. The post was more for droopy1592 than you but I just went out of control and added you to the post. I have just been reading all the comments on other sites as well as this one on the D3 performance "issues" and like I said I went a little crazy, sigh...

Since all the sounds are in wav format, I would think that might be at least one of the reasons this thing is pretty big and a little slow.

droopy1592 and Forge. Please stop bitching, it's a fucking alpha for gods sake. This is why I hate it when alpha's or beta's get released. People do have a first impression and if it does not fit the hype then the bitching starts. Have any of you played the early offical releases of Quake 1 & 2? They were horrible compared to the final versions. Hell when I got the U2K3 leak, I knew that it was not a final indication of the final release performance wise, same thing here. Bleh I am just in a bad mood and I hate reading about people bitching and moaning about alpha releases.
