Sheer stupidity on behalf of the author of the article!
He does not even think that Genghis could be SHARING these genes from the even earlier proto-Asians and not the ORIGIN of the genetic mutations. Dear God, genes are not even understood by people that use them in their studies! He finds a particular mutation in one man who lived a long time ago and assumes it is unique to Genghis. Why would that unique mutation or genetic information not be shared in large numbers by other men in Genghis' time? I mean really! Once they can study a sample of 2500 gene sequences from Genghis' contemporaries and prove Genghis was THE ONLY ONE with those particular traits then we can talk. Otherwise what makes them think this genetic trait was not present in great numbers in the male population before and during those times? |

Khan wasn't a ladies man.
He was a butt pirate...an oreo cowboy...a chocolate miner.... Are you getting the point?! Nobody's descended from Khan...he was a flamboyant, fruity, sasparilla drinking fruitcake. |
In other words, all Europeans alive today have among their ancestors the same man or woman who lived around 1400.
So that means in 1400 there were either only a very few people (one woman and many men or v.v.) or all the rest died of plague? What mathematical nonsense! There were many people in Europe in the 1400s and earlier, so does this mean all of thier ansestors died but the ones from a "special" person? So I guess the "proofs" that these wizzes use are also nonsense. Common sense == bad proof. Granted there were a lot less people in the past, so of course many people around the world decended from the same folks, but I'm sure you have to look back much further than 1400 for a common European ansestor. |

There was some of that in Europe too. Me, for example. I'm descendant from a bastard son of a king of France who had hundreds of sons with several concubines (or should I say palace bitches? ;) ).
My grandfather tracked this. My last name is only shared by bastard descendant of this king. He was italian as his ascentors escaped the French Revolution. Tracking my last name (which is unique) I found web pages from several countries, mostly Canada, Italy, Spain and some in the USA (like me). Interesting, but I don't really care. Now I prefer to keep this post anonymous :) |

thanks for the great links lurch...
in all of the reading in the links you provided, the one about a hillside of chimpanzees having more genetic diversity that any 2 humans gave me an epiphany I think this would have made a better friday topic...wasn't there a study that said artistic genius happenes in the SAME proportion in all races?? so cultural, NOT genetic background, is what truly defines humans good stuff, fuck hitler |

In no particular order, I give you KHANNNNNnnnnnnnnn!! [q]"I've done far worse than kill you. I've hurt you. And I wish to go on.....hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her, marooned for all eternity in the centre of a dead planet......Buried alive.....Buried alive.....KHAN!!.....KHAN!!! "[/q] [q]"From Hell's heart I stab at thee. For hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee!"[/q] [q]He tasks me....He tasks me and I shall have him. I'll chase him round the moons of Nibia and round the Antares Maelstrom and round Perdition's flames before I give him up!"[/q] Copy and pasted with thanks, from: http://www.trekmania.net/wavs/wavs_page2.htm |

What a load of gibberish.
Anyone with any educational credentials knows that this story is obviously false for one big reason... Khan took it in the pooter. He was a man's man, if you know what I mean. |

Well, the research is interesting but looking at human population genetics reveals that we are all more closely related than most folks realize. Now it is cool that the Asian population studied seems to be more homogenous than say a comparable European one. But bear in mind that if one pushes back in time then other ancestor figures with distinctive genetics will be unearthed and they have the potential to be even more widespread. Check out this cool Atlantic article:
http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/2001/04/olson-p1.htm An interview with the author of the above article: http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/interviews/int2002-04-26.htm Finally another article by the same guy: http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/2002/05/olson.htm Sample quote from the last one:
In a 1999 paper titled "Recent Common Ancestors of All Present-Day Individuals," Chang showed how to reconcile the potentially huge number of our ancestors with the quantities of people who actually lived in the past. His model is a mathematical proof that relies on such abstractions as Poisson distributions and Markov chains, but it can readily be applied to the real world. Under the conditions laid out in his paper, the most recent common ancestor of every European today (except for recent immigrants to the Continent) was someone who lived in Europe in the surprisingly recent past—only about 600 years ago. In other words, all Europeans alive today have among their ancestors the same man or woman who lived around 1400.
|

Now we know where Conan got the inspiration for his movie line... "To see my enemies driven before me and to hear the weeping of their women and children". He got it from Genghis Kahn [q]"The greatest pleasure is to vanquish your enemies and chase them before you, to rob them of their wealth and see those dear to them bathed in tears, to ride their horses and clasp to your bosom their wives and daughters."[/q]

Probably something to do with the Genghis Kahn-esque character that asked him (Conan) the question in the first place, eh? :)
