I saw Kyle's write up and I could tell that at least in UT the trilinear on the nvidia card did not look anything like trilinear that I've seen b4. Now, I notice the mipmap borders when I walk around while playing NS, an HL mod. But HL is an old low quality texture game and I'm sure such things as mipmap broders are much more glaring than in a high quality texture game like UT2K3. Which is why, I guess, Kyle said that the nvidia trilinear filtering optomizations didn't seem to be noticeable during play.
I don't have UT2K3. But I do have Wolfenstein ET. I'm going to try the ET game with only bilinear filtering and see if the mipmap borders are noticeable walking around. My guess is that with high quality textures, mipmap borders shouldn't be to bothersome. What does this all mean? That with newer games I may be able to turn trilinear filtering off for a small speed boost on my GF2Ti. :) |

Damn, you would think they would try to be more undercover with all of this.
Atleast we know why T-R never gets any cards to review. That's ok, what's the use of reviewing a crappy card? Thanks for giving us the unbiased story the way it's supposed to be told. This is pretty much the only tech-news site I frequent. Well, I check out the rumors on The Inquirer also. |

Ha Ha Ha .... The same old story.
It is funny TR thinks it is NOT o.k. to cheat when the card costs $400.00 hard-earned money. Does this mean it is O.K. to cheat for lesser costing card? Wake-UP. What do you consider as "HARD-EARNED-MONEY"? It is very subjective in nature. To Bill Gates, $400.00 might be worth a cup of coffee in the morning. To a HOMELESS, it might be a GOD's gift. "Since no promises are made, no promises are broken, and hence you can't sue them for [false advertising]. All any consumer can do is, if you like how it works, keep it. If you don't, take/send it back. Simple as that." False Advertising? It is called FRAUD, which is criminally liable. Do we live in a world where "AS LONG AS WE DON'T GET CAUGHT CHEATING, IT IS A FAIR GAME" is rampant? Ooops. I do not want to sound self-righteous. What makes TR think that ATI is NOT doing the same? Maybe nobody has looked into the matter seriously enough yet? As a ATI customer, I have been duped several times in the past : promised features never realized. Hey, maybe I should have paid $400 to have a right to complain, NOT. Ha Ha Ha. Well DONE nVidia, ATI or other companies trying to make MONEY. I guess it is O.K. to be cheated for <$400. Poor SUckers:-( |

Every card manufacturer cheats in some fashion. ATI just hasn't been caught yet.

"......You can't say "Our card does trilinear filtering" and then permanently disable it in the chip to increase performance, while putting a check box in the card's display options that says "Aniso" because that is blatantly misleading. ....."
Any proof out there that Nvidia is doing that? None. |

Unless they've started in the last five minutes, neither Nvidia (nor ATi for that matter) make any promises anywhere about picture quality or fps in any given application - not on the box, not on the web, not in any magazine ad, not anywhere. They may list a whole slew of features, but nowhere does it say "your results will look X good while going Y fast in game Z." The only preconceived notions or expectations any prospective buyer develops about such things are promulgated by review sites such as this.
Since no promises are made, no promises are broken, and hence you can't sue them for false advertising. All any consumer can do is, if you like how it works, keep it. If you don't, take/send it back. Simple as that. Um... you did make sure not to buy it from some place with any evil restocking fee... didn't you? |

The thing I wonder about, not being a graphics coder, is what do these supposed API changes really do? How could they specify results? And if they can, will that limit improvements?

I'm having trouble finding the original forum post, but AMDMB acknowledges Dave Baumann and the gang at Beyond3D found out the 44.03 drivers were keying on UT2003 first.
Damage, is this what you were looking for? http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6719 This may also be relevent: http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7025 As well as this set of UT2K3 screens showing obvious transitions between MIP maps, which the [H] investigation concluded were not noticable: http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6958&postdays=0&posto... |

not buying nvidia for a while, next video card is going to be an ATI, hopefully they'll figure out how to make videocards by the time i'm ready to buy my next one.
as for what newbee said all i can say is think before you type, you'll make more sense. and using your arguments, ATI is probably the better buy since they cheat LESS. As for ATI getting scrutiny, trust me theres plenty, click on some of the links on TR and you'll find that nvidia is directly compared to ATI and comes up lacking or are found to be cheating. |

Not quite related, but interesting in any case:
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/27557 http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/27568 Looks like HalfLife 2 and NVIDIA AA aren't getting along. |

It seems to me that either, you are in the Nvidia 'camp', or you are not. TR does not seem to be in 'camp', while [H] (and uncle Tom) is about neck deep (shades of Van Smith and pointing fingers).
This was to be the generation of Nvidia products that 3DFX technology was 'folded into'. I see no 3DFX technology, I see a lot of 'spin doctoring' and 'driver optomizing' to cover up lackluster products. The only 3DFX legacy I see here is a 'dropped ball'. |

So how do we fight back? How do we make it so they can't cheat?

Anyone who buys a nvidia graphics card is buying a defective product. I'm surprised no one is talking about AA not working on Nvidia video cards.
Check it out http://www.warp2search.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1... Nvidia should just lower prices already. If you have a shiity product for more money, then it should be cheaper. I don't know about the rest of you, but it's going to take Nvidia years to get my trust back. Trust isn't something you can buy. |

I used 3Dfx before they went belly up, and ATI did eventually follow suit with high quality. nVidia has never had the top mark in quality, and at this rate, never will.
