Banias has been here for months now, with the IBM T40 and all those Dells. When's the next generation Pentium M going to come out? That I think is the Dothan core

Finally read the review. Thanks for the info and work, Diss. Looks like an interesting thing for trips, but I'll wait until they upgrade it in a couple of ways before I take the plunge.

anyone got an idea of the difference in running time on the one battery? I am possibly getting one, but I need a bit of time while running applications. How much time do you save?

Geoff, the reason for the subpar gaming performance is related to the memory size indirectly, but the real problem is memory bandwith. ATI Radeon 9000 cards equipped with 32MB have half the bus as the 64MB versions. ATI didn't reduce the size of each memory chip, they simply used half the chips. So the 32MB version is severely crippled, with just a 64 bit bus instead of 128 bit. It's got half the bandwith.
DELL sells the similar Inspiron 600m in 64MB variants, but not the Latitude D400. |

Too bad Intel will never bastardized their P4 with a desktop verison of the Pentium M imagine who confused your averege joes see that a Pentium M 1.7Ghz beating a Penitum 4 2.4Ghz what a minute doesn't it sound like endorvder that Althon is dealing with the P4?

#8, tests were quite possibly done at XGA resolution as that's the native res of the TFTs in the two laptops?

Good stuff diss, there is alot of people who dont know about the P-M's powers (chip of the year i say) but like you said at the end a 1.7 will not beat a 3ghz but the bat life would make it all worth it. Not to mention a 1.7 should be around 2.6p4. Anyway good Review (where is my 9600!!!)

whattaya know. I just ordered a 1.6G version of this for my boss two days ago. 3.5 pounds, gig of ram, three Port replicators. Hope it delivers. He's going from a Dell that was flaky from day 1, over 8 BIOS revisions, none solving the flakiness. sya!

Just a little nitpicking, but it might be a good idea to keep the order of the graph plots the same throughout.
Sometime the Pentium-M is on top, other times it's on the bottom. |

Why, oh why did you do the games test at 1024x768? You are supposed to test the CPU, and it seems pretty clear to me (frame rates in the 20's!?!) that some of these game benchmarks were more limited by the graphic performance than the CPU.
You should have done the benchmarks at 640x480. Maybe then the comparison of both CPUs would have been more valid (it would have limited the influence of the platform, since both graphic subsystems were not identical. Similair, but not identical). |

Yes. Centrino and all that specific moniker implies is not terribly compelling. However Pentium-M and the possibility of socket-adapters and/or desknote type motherboards that can accept them sounds rockin'

Have to agree that the Pentium-M is an excellent little processor; it's a shame that it isn't available as a desktop CPU, as with the low heat output, a large passive heatsink should do the job nicely, while the performance is more than adequate for most uses - certainly any where the machine's silence is important, like home theatre.

I really lust after a nice little centrino notebook with a 12-13 in. xga screen, light weight, and great battery life. Don't really need one and probably can't afford one right now though.

Anyone know how cool a Pentium M is supposed to run compared to a Pentium 4-M?
BTW FIRST POST! again...I guess that means I should get a life :( |
