dunno, I've installed SP2 on 3 machines and they've all blown up. not worth going to that mess for a new browser. I'll stick with what I've got.

Has nobody heard of stuff like myie, netcaptor etc? How come nobody's complaining about free software driving other businesses -out of business- ?

Perhaps they just want to do it because their developers are sick of releasing new versions and coming up with even more added version numbers for their product. The current IE version number is approaching 40 characters!

I don't think it's FF that "made" MS come up with IE7, I think it's MS's concern with security and with Users complaining about Malware that brought this on. I'm sure they were going to release it for Longhorn anyways, since it's only going to be preliminary testing this summer. Just like Avalon and Indigo their making alot of Longhorn "features" backwards compatible. Which is what Developers want and users want.

It's still nice to see it done. Most people will eventually get it via WindowsUpdate, I assume, and it will cut down on malware at least somewhat.

I'm sure, just like the whole reduced WMP edition of WinXP, that if you took IE out of Windows XP it would be the same price as with IE.

I'm not even so much concerned with the security. Is it going to be standards compliant and render things properly so I don't have to put in redundant sloppy code to get my pages to look right in IE when they look right by default in Opera and FireFox.

I don't have Flash installed in FF. I find I miss it little, and the amount of ads I miss is well worth not having it. I keep it installed on IE and use IEview to view flash intensive pages.

There's no way decrepit old Microsoft is going to out-innovate the open source monster that is FF and it's army of plug-in writers.

<sniff> Everyone smell that? <sniff>

That is the smell of fear. Microsoft got complacent, now they are moving again to protect their monopoly. I have to wonder if this will renew the browser lawsuits since any move on their part to retain or extend that monopoly will be a clear breach of the settlement.

I don't think MS much cares about FF's marketshare (they only started caring about Navigator when Netscape started claiming it was going to make the OS obsolete) but they do care about security, or at least the perception of (in)security. If they're revising the codebase, they might as well put in UI improvements too. The corporation as a whole may not care whether tabs and whatnot in FF is handing IE its ass, but the people on the IE team will. Remember there was a time when IE was innovating UI improvements too.

Yeah, most of us enthusiasts won't use it. But there are lots of corps and home users out there that won't go out and get a new browser but will install one that arrives via Windows Update. If that closes holes, stops some worms from propagating, and saves us from having to fix our computer illiterate friends' borked machines, we all benefit.

And who doesn't think FF was directly responsible for causing this? I'm sure IE7 would've appeared in Longhorn, but this is great.

Hate to be the naysayer (well, not really), but how long do you think it will take untill we see a new security hole? I bet virus writers are just rubbing their hands in glee, something new and exciting to work on (IE6 probably got boring). Spyware companies will adapt, and release new spyware. I think that just becuase Microsoft released it, people are going to hack it just because of the name.

Heck I'm so used to the 'Fox now that there's no point in switching back. IE7 is going to have to have some reinvented wheels to get back a lot of people who have dumped it for other browsers. But for the sake of the thousands upon thousands of identity theft victims out there, I hope it does greatly improve security.

Personally, I say its about bloody time.

I don't know whether I'll start using it again once its released, it depends on how well it compares to Firefox and Opera. Personally I see this as a very good thing.
