Poppycock.

Tripe.

Rubbish.

"Hello I have the latest Laptop. It has a MR-29 in it"
"Oh, really, my laptop has a MX-59"
"Ah. Well mine has R in it, which is *obviously* better than an X"
"Yeah, but mine beat that other guy's desktop with a i520 in it, and 520 is bigger than 59"
"Yeah, you're just compensating for a small 'R'!"

Incomprehensibe!

Meaningless

A inter-corporation joke at the expense of our, the consumers dignity?

i don't understand why so many of you guys have a problem with the modeling scheme. i mean, so what if they change it the way they make them. it doesn't seem to bother us when it comes to graphics card modeling scheme which changes all the time (ie. ATI's 9800 to x800)

Jan Gutter, a marketing manager based in Munich, also explained AMD's logic behind the somewhat byzantine numbering scheme using Ms and Ls and Ts.

Essentially, those models having the same number at the end will have the same performance, although the decision to start near the middle of the alphabet appears to be a somewhat arbitrary decision.

The T in MT stands for the 25 wattage that these processors have. The ML series function at 35 watts.

Explained Gutter: We need an additional brand, people understand Athlon 64 is a performance brand but we needed another brand for the mobility story. The Turion 64 is for the thin and light market and this is the distinction in the positioning. The underlying architecture is still AMD64 including Powernow, enhanced and the other features, he said.

He added: It's on our roadmap to have a dual core notebook chip. Opteron processors will be the middle of this year, then the desktop, then

AMD seems reluctant to publish details on Turion's clock speeds, cache sizes, and actual power consumption, but a price list is available.

Well Diss, what is this then:

Hrm. I just realized, that you could prolly expect 5-10w (I guess) of that thermal number to be caused by the Memory Controller, that would normally be in the Northbridge...So really, knock off a few watts and you'll have a more comparable number to the P-M's number.

Eh.

I'll be damned, AMD did publish clock and cache numbers. Dang, now I'll have to eat my hat.

I am really sick of the rating numbers too. Just tell me the frickin' clock speed, cache, FSB, and power comsumption. Stop wrapping it up in meaningless number schemes.

Cool, can I use one of these with a regular desktop mainboard? Useful in a HTPC.

I will use this new line of processor to teach my kids the alphabet.

I give up. PR number rating schemes are just going downhill, fast. I was OK with AMD's Athlon XP 1600-3200+, and to a less extent (Because of the exageration between s939 and 754 in the scheme) 2800-4200+.

But adding letters and non-linear progression? This isn't any better than intel's! And intel's mobile numbers are utterly retarded!

I don't see what's so hard to understand? They're Newcastle/Paris-die single-channel S754 chips... 3000+ to 3700+ PR, most likely 512K L2, and different power consumption ratings / lower core voltage requirements.

If nothing else, this will be easier to swallow than the Centrino garbage.

My initial reaction:

STOOOOOPID

Will have to see how it pans out I guess. I know one thing for sure - I'm completely happy with my A64 3000+ lappy. Some of you may have heard me gush over it in the forums. And its performance rating is more than adequate, and easily understandable.

Why not continue with the current speed rating system me asks. IMO, that would put them at an advantage over Intel's uber confusing system. The new system seems useless to me.

I agree with Zenith... but seems that all those comments against PR ratings have come in after Sudhian's editorial on the issue - anybody afraid to voice something here?
EDIT: thank lord that the P4 will be going out sometime... then AMD can can its PR ratings, because by then nobody wants to relate to P4 performance.

Also, until they release speeds and thermals, they aren't getting my attention or money.

I don't ride with companies that flow with the Reality Distortion Field in full affect.
