why pay for that, a 6600 or an x1300 at that price?
the x800 costs just $102 after rebate on newegg. 12 pipes, and 700MHz, 256bit memterface. |

I don't think phileasfogg is an S3 fanboy, I think he's an S3 employee.
You need to have fans before you can have fanboys... |

4 pixle pipes? How is this compaired to ATi's X200 IGP, Intel's GMA 900, and nvidia 6100/6150 IGP? Seems to me, if you want to make a descrete graphics card, it should out perform whatever is already on your motherboard....

Price is a bit high but this card is a solid competitor to the 6600 and the X1300 pro. In fact, sometimes it even matches the X700 and the 6600DDR2. Power consumption is lower than the competitors and the 1400MHz DDR3 is very nice. There are a few problems with it, though. One is that there's still some quirks with certain games (very few, though). Another problem is the fact that it uses the very high quality super sampling anti-aliasing, which gives it a huge performance drop. Sure surper-sampling gives better quality than multi-sampling but the performance hit makes it very useless.
If the 128MB version was $80 (or less, heh) bucks and the 256MB version close to $100 then they would be good deals. As it stands they're pretty pricy considering that the big players can give you pretty much equivalent performance for the same price. It's kind of nice that there's now a third player and I wish S3 well in its reentry to the add-on graphics market. |

LOL@ sale - $127??!> You can get a 6600GT for that which would blow it out of the water. They were a joke then and are a joke now. Do not buy these. Your nV and ATI optionas are far superior.

I call shill on phileasfogg!
I never thought id see an s3 fanboy. ; ) Seriously, who cares about 3dmark scores? They're pretty useless when comparing across brands, IMO. |

I might buy one of these boards out of sheer curiosity.

Good luck to them, certainly nothing wrong with getting a third graphics card manufacturer on the scene. I hope the drivers are up to scratch.

Why do they have fans?
A passive X1300 looks like a much better choice. |

Lets see how tis works out a few years later... they need to seriously catch up in terms of a respectable driver support system and I don't trust their drivers since I already expect them to be "via" quality.

Any word on driver quality? That's what's gonna make or break these cards...

S3 is trying to make a card to compete with the ATI and nVidia giants.
Do you even realize what this may mean later on for consumers??
Better choice of cards
Lower prices
More newer technologie to improve GFX performance.
I'm all for S3 here and I hope they make a big(and good) name for themselfs soon.
