Boy that's expensive, then again the PS3 looks like it will one-up the 360. Marketing-wise it may nimble on the Wii early on.
At this point all bets are off. Will need the Wii release info, which happens today, at the least. |

Why is everyone bitching about the price? Hell for months after the Xbox360 release you could not buy one without spending at least $700 because of the bundles and no standalone system. A buddy of mine had to drop $1000 for a Xbox 360 at EB. Granted he got 5 gmaes with the bundle, but still. I thought consoles were suppost to be cheap and affordable entertainement for all households. These prices are ridiculous. I buy every console that comes out. However I think this round I am only going to get a Revolution.
The Xbox 360, is not worth the money and I really doubtr the PS3 will be worth it as well. |

I'm usually not one to say I told you so... but I told you so:
http://techreport.com/ja.zz?comments=9871 Rousterfar I have been saying $399 for some time now. Anyone who thinks Sony will sell the PS3 for more then the X360 (non retard pack) is a fool. But that wasn't all: Rousterfar Think about it. Sony sold the PSOne for $299 and the PS2 for $299. They proved to be huge sellers at that price. Do you really think Sony is going to jump more then $100 for the PS3 above that? Sony is not stupid. I'm sure they wanted to hit $299 again, but decided to bite the bullet and hit $399 for cost reasons. You guys don't understand the console industry if you think the PS3 will cost more then $399 at launch. ... in the year 2005 http://techreport.com/ja.zz?comments=8623 Rousterfar I'm going to let you guys in on a little secret. The PS3 will also launch for $299. All this "OMG IT'S GOING TO BE TEH EXPENSIVE" talk is just part of Sony's PR campaign. They announce hardware, but no price. They then spend the next half a year talking about how advance the product is. They talk about how expensive it’s going to be to make. Then right before launch they get on stage and announce “$299!” Everyone is shocked at being able to buy this advanced hardware for such a cheap price and runs out and preorders the thing. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the company’s history with Playstation products. Everyone thought the PSOne would be $399. It launched for $299. Everyone thought the PS2 would be $399. It launched for $299. Everyone thought the PSP would be $299. It launched for (near) $199 in Japan with a “Value Pack” for (near) $249 and the “Value Pack” of $249 here in the USA. History is repeating itself. Don’t be fooled. PS3 will be $299. Rousterfar Sony will announce the $299 price point within days of the Xbox release. They are masters of this. Rousterfar Ken comes out and says "PS3 will be expensive." I don't see how that goes against what I am saying at all. If anything it helps prove it. It's all part of Sony's PR campaign. Just watch. PS3 will be $299. Adding insult to injury... http://techreport.com/ja.zz?comments=8016 Rousterfar People thought PSOne would be $399, it ended up being $299. People thought PS2 would be $499, it ended up being $299. People think the PS3 will be $499 to $599. People are often wrong... Mark my words. PS3 will be $299 when it hits the USA. Remember folks People think the PS3 will be $499 to $599. People are often wrong... How true! And now something to look forward to: Rousterfar That's what I am thinking too. If the PS3 is more powerful then the Xbox2 I don't expect to see it right off the bat. It's going to take a couple years for developers to truely learn the system. Rousterfar, I'm not out to get you or anything. I just think it's a little funny how passionately you argued on behalf of Sony, only to have your worst fears realized. Let's all give Rousterfar a pat on the back for keeping the speculation alive :) |

Where's all the PSP kiddies defending their beloved price-gouging corporation now? Oh yeah that's right they are stuck with very expensive paper weights.
In these days when Dell can sell a complete computer system for $400, anybody spending this kind of money on what amounts to nothing but a glorified "toy" is beyond moronic. No thanks Sony hope you have your Chapter 11 papers handy. |

Well, I have to admit that I thought that Sony would be selling it for less and that the manufacturing costs weren'y as high as speculated. Seems I was wrong. It's yet another step along the path to self destruction that Sony is intent on following for some inexplicable reason. If I worked for Microsoft I'd be considering ordering in the champagne right now.
I won't ever be buying a PS3 though - it's a vast hulking ugly box that costs too much. Maybe when it drops to $199 in 2010... I think it will be a Wii for me, + games, controllers and party food - even then I'll wait until next year to get one, still got enough games to finish on my current PS2 and Gamecube. |

*winces* for that, you really could almost buy a worthwhile PC. I'm sure that, this being Sony, the cheaper one is crippled, meaning it's only worth getting the pricey one--or skipping the whole thing (that's me!). Revolution for the win! I mean, jeez, that's more than a months rent.

I wonder what Blu-Ray player manufacturers are going to think about this. Based on the current estimated prices of these players the manufacturers are going to find it hard to offer an attractive Blu-Ray player product when compared with the PS3?
PS3 - $499 for Blu-Ray player + state of the art console Blu-Ray players - surely they'll have to be $299 or cheaper else they simply eint gonna sell? Personally i think the PS3 is too expensive at launch as: a) i dont want / need a Blu-Ray player b) dont have a TV which will take advantage of Blu-Ray anyway and dont plan on having one for atleast another 2 years c) xbox360 is cheaper d) Wii will be even cheaper and most original? |

hmm, so basically either buy a crippled - storage, output, etc - version for $500 or the real thing for $600... that's a gonna be tough sell imho

Also the cheapest version ($499) will only have support at 720p for Blu-Ray discs. Nice way to screw the consumer Sony. :|

Err, no thanks. That's just too much. $600 is a serious PC upgrade for me, and I'll get a lot more use out of it.

This news is only somewhat shocking to me. The only shocking parts were this - that Sony included an HDD in both versions, and that there is no way to upgrade the lower cost version to match the specs on the higher cost version. At least MS did that. Oh well. I personally think that Sony is aiming a gun at their foot with careless abandon as to where their finger is on the trigger...and to what they've loaded the gun with (seems like a kind of incendiary round to me).

$599 in the U.S., €599 in Europe
€1 = $1,26 .. so Europeans are getting a 26% more expensive PS3. Cool. Or not. |

There is more than just the 40GB disk capacity difference between the two SKU's:
The 20GB PS3 will not feature integrated 802.11b/g. Furthermore, the 20GB version will not feature HDMI output. <-HUGE!!! Details Here: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2206 |

I remember all those people who paid through the nose for PS2's at launch and think this is targeted more towards them than anyone. ;)
Does anyone remember those insane bundles with tons of crap games with a 100-200 dollar markup? Or the ebay listings for thousands of dollars? And that was just the Xbox 360 launch. When you go further back and remember the PS2's launch, which was crazier by far, then you realize that a lot of people are willing to pay a lot of money for a new console. Especially one that has the name, "Playstation." |

See this:
http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/060509ae.pdf $599 PS3 has 60GB HDD, 1 x HMDI (not 2), wifi, CF/SD/MS slots, 4 x USB2, GbE, Bluetooth, digital audio out. $499 PS3 has 20GB HDD, 4x USB2, GbE, Bluetooth, digital audio out. No HDMI (so no 1080p and no HDCP), no wifi, no card slots. Oh, and the controller has motion (not position) sensing, it does not have vibration ("incompatible with motion sensors", or to put it another way "Immersion lawsuit"). |
