"Developers Have No PS3 Dev Kits?"

"It is absolutely terrifying to think that 6 months away from launch, developers have no PS3 dev kits and no real specs on the console. Had this been some “unnamed developer” I wouldn’t even bother with this story but it is the President of Sega and the CEO of THQ making these claims. If Sega and THQ can’t get dev kits, something is seriously wrong. "

Financial news publication Bloomberg.com is reporting that when the PlayStation 3 launches this November there will be "fewer and less-powerful games because the company hasn't given final technical details of the new console." "A lot of developers have not gotten the kits,'' said Sega of America president Simon Jeffrey while attending E3 last week. "There certainly will not be a lot of titles available."

Yikes. Is it just me or is Sony really going out of their way to sink the PS3?

I don't see how this is an endorsement of Wii by either company. I think this just shows that Sony and MS regard each other as the primary competitor, and Nintendo as a harmless also-ran that they might as well endorse, because they don't really consider it a threat. They might turn out to be dead wrong, but I susepct that's how they're perceiving things.

Can MS or Sony develop (or just copy - MS is good in this business) similar controlers for Xbox360 & PS3 as Nintendo has?

"That's what consumers base their purchasing decisions on -- value."

Hmmm...lets see, what products have sony baloney brought value to me:

MiniDisc replaced with mp3/video player/recorder from archos. no comparison.
Memory Stick replaced with decent camera that takes nice and fast large sd cards
BluRay will never be replaced since i will be buying hd-dvd

THERE IS NO VALUE.

Good for Nintendo. Rather than clamor for stupid fast processing and fancy shaders, they're worried about gameplay. Reminds me of the Sega Genesis days. The Genesis was clearly superior, but the old NES was able to hold off long enough for Nintendo to produce the SNES, which I believe still had a lower clockspeed than the Genesis, but much better graphics specs.

Blu-ray or not, I'm not spending $600 on a game console. I think $299 is my limit, and I've never paid more than the $250 I paid for my PS2.

I don't understand the blu-ray thing. So what? Not like I'm going to have a huge collectino of blu-ray DVDs, or I'm going to swap out my entire collection of standard DVDs for blu-ray versions. It's not doing me any good.

I agree also. It's the first console I'm considering since the PS2.

Nintendo could score big with PC gamers.

A lot of people still prefer to game on their PCs and for them, the unique things a Wii brings to the table - along with the small price tag - could make it their first console.

To me the Wii is the most impressive of the bunch. Sure the Xbox360 and the PS3 will have the power and graphics to do just about anything (anyone seen the realtime shots of FFVIII - wow) but that is all they are banking on. The last system I bought was a Gamecube. Why? Quality titles. Sony and Microsoft can toss a lot of games out the developers doors but the percentage of them that are killer games is nothing compared to the developers at Nintendo. Flame me if you want, but I'm really looking forward to see what Nintendo does with the Wii's controller. It hasn't even been released yet and the kids that are animated slide your body left when you mash the left buttons already have an advantage. The possibilities are limitless with what they can do with it. Also, who cares if it doesn't play DVD's. I have a DVD player for that. Blu-ray and HD-DVD are still fighting over standards. It could become a $600 game system, with no HD DVD capabilities should Sony lose the format war. I want an inexpensive game system with lots of good titles to choose from. Nobody can deny that Mario and Zelda look totally kickass. With the N64 Nintendo burned a lot of liscensing bridges but they rebuilt those after learning from their mistakes. I think that Sony and Microsoft don't really realize the potential that Nintendo has. They've been building game consoles for over 20 years. Sony is at the closest with half that experience. Nintendo has a lot of ground to gain, but I don't see them fizzling out the way a lot of people seem to think.

Sorry for the long post, but there is a lot to cover here. :) That is my $.02 and change.

Nintendo says its console will not compete with the Xbox 360 and PS3 on the next-generation front, but that it will instead emphasize gameplay and ease of use in order to become more accessible to non-gamers. Both Sony and Microsoft appear to be banking on people purchasing the Wii as a second system by default, which certainly bodes well for Nintendo. Thanks to DailyTech for the tip.

Didn't I say this already before?

hmm... finally a smart reply from sony that doesn't makem look so stupid hehe.

Also, sneaky image warefare by both MS and Sony, they make themselves look good, and at the same time take an indirect jab at Nintendo by making them look like a secondary player in the market so not a threat enough to worry about... that sort of image they want to portray is a clever way to fight over this PR warfare...

That aside, the Wii sure looks like the most interesting console on the way, I can't see a serious gamer not getting one if suposedly so affordable. Even its competitors endorse it lol.

God, I'm so happy I'm not interested in console systems, or super-ultra-cutting-edge computer equipment.

Marketing departments are the worst.

So in Microsoft's and Sony's world only some people own their machines but everyone owns Nintendo's? And they're cool with that? Wow...

These Sony people should go back to school and take Macro Economics AGAIN! And this time they should stay awake... (at least during the part where the prof covers the prinicple of how "non essential goods" tend to be extremely price sensitive, and maybe even when the prof covers the concomitant theory of "price elasticity gain"). At least then they might be prepared for the brutal reality of what they are about to experience.

My prediction is that some of these guys will be lucky if they have a job the second half of next year. As it seems doubtful that Sony will "break even".

Maybe they figure they can't compete directly with it because it's such a different type of gaming experience and it's priced way lower than any other next gen console. Perhaps they understand that graphics, even badass graphics, do not a good game make.
