Dell to offer Opteron-based servers

The following just dropped into my inbox with a thud:

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - May 18, 2006 - AMD (NYSE: AMD) released the following statement today regarding the announcement Dell Inc. made in its quarterly earnings statement that it intends to offer AMD Opteron(tm) Dual Core processor-based servers. "We welcome Dell, and Dell customers, to the world of AMD64," said Marty Seyer, AMD senior vice president, Commercial Business. "Dell is a customer-focused company and we're pleased to see that they are listening to their customers and providing them the choice of innovative AMD products. We look forward to working closely with Dell in bringing the benefits of AMD leadership in performance-per-watt solutions to Dell customers."
Whoa. has confirmation of Dell's plans. The timing of this one seems rather odd, with Intel's Bensley server platform and Woodcrest-based Xeon processors imminent. Why wait until Intel looks very much competitve again (to say the least) before making this move? Anyhow, I'm sure for a lot of IT folks, this is a very welcome development, regardless.
