AMD readies third fab?

— 4:53 PM on May 28, 2006

AMD is planning to announce a project that will be "of great importance" to the company in Dresden, Germany next Monday. The Financial Times Deutschland says AMD will announce a $1.3 billion modernization and reorganization plan for its existing fabs—Fab 30 and Fab 36—which are both located in Dresden. However, rumor has it AMD is preparing to build a whole new fab instead. This rumor is backed by "several German publications," EE Times says, which all claim that the chipmaker will set up a third fab in Dresden alongside its existing two. EE Times also believes that Singapore could be a possible choice for a potential new fab, quoting AMD CEO Hector Ruiz as having said he "could foresee" a third AMD fab in Singapore. This location could be a logical choice, considering it is the home of AMD production partner Chartered Semiconductor.
