Microsoft in talks to buy eBay, rumors claim

— 8:44 AM on May 29, 2006

A News.com blogger has caught an interesting article on the New York Post about purported buyout talks between Microsoft and eBay. The NY Post cites "multiple sources close to the matter" as saying Microsoft wants to purchase eBay and integrate the auction site into its MSN portal. However, the merger talks are said to be slowing down as the two companies investigate the possible buyout's implications in an anti-trust context. eBay's recent partnership with Yahoo could also be an issue, but the Post quotes one of its sources as saying Microsoft doesn't consider the Yahoo deal to be an obstacle.

If the Post's report is genuine, the talks could represent yet another attempt by Microsoft to boost MSN's popularity by partnering up with another major player. Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft had held talks to ally with Yahoo. The plan was for Microsoft either to purchase a part of Yahoo or sell off MSN to the company, the WSJ claimed, but the discussions are said to have died down for unknown reasons. Microsoft also planned to hook up with AOL last year, but Google beat Redmond to the punch by purchasing a 5% stake in AOL.
