Newegg planning European expansion
DigiTimes reports that Newegg is planning to expand its online retail
business by entering the European market. The site quotes none other than Newegg vice CEO
SC Lee, who told DigiTimes that Newegg was eyeing expansion through
either an acquisition or a new subsidiary on the old continent. The article doesn't
specify which countries Newegg would likely expand to, but the company
already appears to own newegg.de and newegg.co.uk domains for Germany and the
United Kingdom, respectively. A quick domain lookup on Nominet confirms the UK domain's
registrant as "NewEgg.com," and a peek on German registrar DENIC shows the .de domain is
registered to the same Montebello, CA address as the .co.uk domain.
An expansion into Europe wouldn't be Newegg's first globalization
effort. Less than a year ago, the company announced
a move into the Asian market and opened an online store for China at newegg.com.cn.
Last year, rumors were also circulating
that Newegg would open a Canadian branch, but the company has yet to
announce anything on that front.
