First Blu-ray movies hit stores

— 1:51 PM on June 20, 2006

The first Blu-ray movie titles from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment launched today, marking the Blu-ray format's introduction in the United States. Seven titles are now up on store shelves: 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, The Terminator, Underworld Evolution, and XXX. These will be joined by Ultraviolet next week. A quick peek at our price search engine does indeed show all the launch titles available at prices ranging from $11.99 for The Terminator to $25.99 for Underworld Evolution, with others at the $19.99 mark. Those figures are roughly in-line with HD-DVD prices, which are also around $20, give or take a few dollars.

Of course, unlike their HD-DVD brethren, the new Blu-ray titles will remain orphans until Sunday. That's when the first set-top Blu-ray player—Samsung's BD-P1000—is due out. Early adopters who grabbed the first movies today will have to cough up no less than $1,000 for the player, as well.
