Another AMD-ATI merger rumor surfaces

— 12:52 PM on July 7, 2006

Rumors of a possible AMD-ATI merger have died down since the outbreak of reports last month, but an article on Chinese site Sohu (translate here) seems to have renewed speculation about the subject. The Chinese site says a person close to the negotiations disclosed that AMD has entered a purchase agreement with ATI, and that a public announcement will follow soon. As Reg Hardware says, this story should be taken with a "big pinch of salt," especially since Sohu's source declined to give specifics such as the purchase price. Additionally, the analyst who appears to be behind the initial merger rumors gave little justification for his belief that the deal was "likely." The lack of concrete information doesn't discredit these rumors entirely, though. TweakTown heard last month that Intel was considering the possibility of the deal internally.
