LG balks at Blu-ray/HD-DVD hybrid player

— 2:09 AM on August 1, 2006

Word got out back in March that LG had scrapped its plans for a Blu-ray player and instead decided to develop a Blu-ray/HD DVD hybrid. LG has now changed its mind and decided to go back to the Blu-ray-only camp, CE Pro reports. While the hybrid machine was due out in the late summer or early fall, LG has not disclosed a schedule for the release of the Blu-ray player. LG VP of Sales and Marketing Bob Perry only said a product announcement will come "later in the year."

LG's flip-flopping may not spell doom for hybrid Blu-ray/HD DVD drives altogether, though. Samsung revealed a little over a month ago that it was considering the introduction of a universal player, and Ricoh also announced three weeks back that it had developed a diffraction plate that allows reading and writing to both high-definition formats.
