Dell ditching PDA market?

— 1:29 PM on August 2, 2006

Dell may very well be leaving the PDA market, if a report by DigiTimes is to be believed. While the PC giant still offers a line of Axim PDAs, no new models have been announced for almost a year. Furthermore, Dell's Taiwan design center reportedly transferred all research and development resources from its PDA unit to the notebook unit in mid-2005. Dell's purported move away from PDAs would go hand in hand with a consistent year-over-year decrease in shipments for handheld devices since the third quarter of 2005. Dell's handheld shipments were 33.8% lower in the first quarter of this year compared to last year, while worldwide handheld shipments also sunk 19.4%. By contrast, worldwide shipments for mobile phones increased 26% over the same time period.
