Deal of the week: Get perpendicular on the cheap

— 4:11 PM on August 4, 2006

Seagate's 320GB Barracuda 7200.10 piqued our interest last night because of its low price, but we see that Newegg now has a special deal on the drive that places it at $94.99 with free shipping. We were quite happy with this drive's 750GB cousin, and this model offers most of the same features: perpendicular recording technology, 16MB of cache, support for 300MB/s Serial ATA transfer rates, Native Command Queuing, and a five-year warranty. Thanks to its perpendicular recording technology, the 320GB Barracuda 7200.10 also squeezes its storage capacity inside just two platters, while other 320GB drives out today require three platters. Fewer platters generally translates to lower power consumption, less heat, and lower noise levels. At $94.99, the Barracuda 7200.10 320GB ends up costing slightly less than $0.30 per gigabyte, too, making it a very nice deal overall.
