Intel gaming GPU due out in fall 2007?

— 11:23 AM on August 14, 2006

Word has been circulating for the past couple of months that Intel is getting ready to go beyond its integrated graphics chipsets and hop into the gaming graphics processor business. The guys at The Inquirer reported last month that Intel gaming GPUs will be based on Imagination Technologies' PowerVR architecture, and now they're saying the chips will come out in the late summer or early fall of 2007. Intel already licensed Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX core back in May 2005, reportedly for use in its G965 integrated graphics chipset. Further use of PowerVR technology in supposed gaming GPUs might make sense, but no information has leaked regarding exactly which technologies those GPUs will use or how they might stack up against the competition from ATI and NVIDIA.
