Sony ships 50GB recordable Blu-ray media

— 5:45 PM on August 16, 2006

Sony has started shipping some recordable dual-layer Blu-ray media that will go with its upcoming BWU-100A 5.25" desktop Blu-ray burner. Recordable discs are coming first, with their rewriteable brethren planned for "later this year." Currently, only single-layer 25GB Blu-ray media is available, but Sony's 50GB dual-layer recordables might allow users to better justify the BWU-100A burner's expected $750 retail price—at least, if they're comfortable with the 50GB discs' suggested $48-a-pop pricing. Owners of Pioneer's $949-999 BDR101A desktop Blu-ray burner will be left out, because that drive only supports single-layer Blu-ray media. Thanks to Engadget for the tip.
