Acer to become third largest notebook vendor?

— 2:02 PM on August 17, 2006

Acer is likely to take Toshiba's place as the world's third biggest notebook vendor in 2006, DigiTimes reports. Acer is currently number four behind Dell, HP, and Toshiba. However, according to numbers from the Gartner research group, Acer is expected to sell a total of 9.45-9.95 million notebooks this year, compared to 9.11 million for Toshiba. Dell and HP have both placed orders for 11-12 million notebooks for this year, but DigiTimes doesn't say how many of those orders will translate to sales. Regardless, climbing past Toshiba would be an impressive feat for Acer, considering it was in sixth place just four years ago.
