Xbox 360 HD-DVD player to support movies only
Bad news for those hoping the launch of Microsoft's external HD-DVD
player for the Xbox 360 will pave the way for 30GB game discs with voice
acting and full motion videos aplenty. Microsoft's Taiwanese branch has
confirmed that the HD-DVD player will be intended
for movies only and won't have support for HD-DVD games.
Microsoft cites fears of increased costs and decreased stability as the
reasons behind its decision to limit the HD-DVD player's capabilities.
Indeed, some gamers wouldn't be too happy about needing to cough up
another $200 or
more just to run a game, and quality assurance might suffer if
studios released games on both DVD and HD-DVD formats. Nevertheless,
some game developers reportedly think HD-DVD games would help the Xbox
360 better compete against Sony's upcoming PlayStation 3 and are
disappointed with Microsoft's decision.
