Mass battery recall to spare Sony notebooks

— 11:06 AM on August 29, 2006

Apple and Dell initiated recalls for a total of nearly six million Sony laptop batteries earlier this month, and a report of a battery catching fire in a Sony Vaio notebook in Kansas City last week suggested that Sony itself could be next. However, the Japanese company has stated that the faulty battery in question was counterfeit, and that is has no plans to recall batteries for its line of Vaio notebooks. A Sony spokesman told Laptop Magazine that the company "hasn’t experienced any significant issues with batteries" in any of its laptops, adding that another battery failure report separate from the one in Kansas City was also not caused by a faulty Sony battery.
