ATI R600 graphics cards to draw 250W of power?

— 2:51 PM on September 18, 2006

Power consumption for Nvidia's GeForce 7950 GX2 dual-GPU monster is already nothing to scoff at, but the next round of high-end graphics cards could put those numbers to shame. After reporting that cards based on Nvidia's G80 graphics chip might need an external power supply, The Inquirer now says it has received confirmation that upcoming ATI R600-based cards will suck up a staggering 250W of power. That figure is twice as much as the power consumption rating for ATI's current Radeon X1950 XTX, although it's still a good 34W below the aggregate maximum power draw for a pair of GeForce 7950 GX2s running in Quad SLI mode. Still, if The Inq's numbers are right, prospective users may not have to spend as much on their heating oil come the card's rumored early 2007 launch.
