Lite-On not ditching consumer market after all

— 12:53 PM on October 30, 2006

A story on DigiTimes stated last week that Lite-On intended to pull out of the consumer optical disc drive (ODD) business. The report said poor financial results and a shrinking gross margin had pushed Lite-On to ditch the consumer ODD segment and to continue producing drives as an original equipment manufacturer for other companies only. As it turns out, Lite-On's statement was misinterpreted and the company's move will only apply to set-top DVD recorders, a new report by DailyTech states. The Taiwanese firm intends to continue producing and marketing consumer DVD drives and DVD burners under its own brand name—presumably alongside its BenQ-branded offerings.
