Deal of the week: Seagate hard drive combo

— 4:25 PM on November 3, 2006

For this week's deal, we've spotted an interesting combo offer over at Newegg. The retailer is selling a 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 hard drive for $229.99 and bundling it with a 250GB Barracuda 7200.9 at no extra charge. Together, the drives add up to 750GB of storage space for roughly 31 cents a gigabyte, a per-gigabyte cost not usually seen in drives above the $100 mark. Considering Seagate's 750GB Barracuda 7200.10 is currently selling for $379.99, paying $229.99 for the same amount of space isn't half bad, either.

Some may lament the fact that Newegg isn't giving away a 250GB Barracuda 7200.10 instead of the 7200.9 model. However, the 7200.10 series' perpendicular recording advantage is partly lost on the 250GB model, since it has the same number of platters as its 7200.9 predecessor. The 7200.9 may have less cache (8MB instead of 16MB,) but it still has 300MB/s Serial ATA support, native command queuing, and the all-important five-year warranty.
