Micron takes Rambus to the woodshed

— 9:54 PM on August 28, 2000

JC alerted us to a press release from Micron about a suit they've just filed against Rambus. Here's the gist of it:

Boise, Idaho, August 28, 2000 - Micron Technology, Inc., today filed suit against Rambus Inc. of Mountain View, California, in U.S. District Court in Delaware.

The suit asserts violations of the Federal antitrust laws, and also asserts invalidity, non-infringement, and non-enforceability of Rambus patents pursuant to a number of different bases.

Finally, the tables turn. Rambus has been shaking down memory manufacturers with its patent claims—with some success—while clouding the prospects for the next logical step in cheap, fast memory: DDR SDRAM. Micron has been a very vocal supporter of DDR memory, and it looks like they're finally going to take on Rambus's patent claims in court. 'Twill be interesting to see if any other big-name SDRAM manufacturers join Micron in this one.
