AMD to snip prices for the holiday season

Shoppers will enjoy reduced prices on AMD processors this month, according to a report by The Inquirer. The report says AMD will apply "instant rebates" to a number of its chips for a limited time throughout December, likely in an effort to draw in sales from the Christmas shopping spree. The rebates will slim down prices as follows:

Processor

Socket

List price Cut price
Athlon 64 X2 5200+ AM2 $403 $296
Athlon 64 X2 5000+ AM2 $301 $285
Athlon 64 X2 4600+ AM2 $240 $215
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ AM2 $187 $173
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ AM2 $152 $138
Sempron 3200+ AM2 $67 $56
Sempron 3000+ 754 $56 $44

The Inq says AMD will apply the aforementioned cuts to the Sempron chips today and to the Athlon 64 X2 chips on December 8. AMD has also been selling some Opterons at slightly reduced prices since October, but those chips are older Socket 939 models. All prices will go back to normal on December 31. Meanwhile, Intel supposedly intends to keep its prices steady for the time being.
