ATI's Radeon X1800, X1600 cards join the fold

— 5:04 PM on December 4, 2006

After adding support for ATI CrossFire multi-GPU setups to their Folding@Home GPU client, the folks at Stanford have further broadened compatibility by introducing support for Radeon X1800 and X1600 graphics cards, Beyond3D reports. Stanford's FAQ stresses that these cards don't offer the same level of folding power as Radeon X1900- and X1950-series cards because they have fewer shader processors. However, the new GPU client should still allow many users to improve their folding production without having to cough up the cash for a recent or expensive graphics card. The new client (version 5.91 beta2) is available here in both console and graphical variants.

As Beyond3D mentions, Stanford still hasn't announced any specific plans regarding support for Nvidia's new GeForce 8800 cards. Folding@Home Project Director Vijay Pande only stated in a recent interview that he and his team were "looking into" the GeForce 8800 series' performance.
