Sub-$500 Core 2 Quad coming in Q3 '07?

— 11:20 AM on December 19, 2006

The rumor mill has been grinding for a while about a so-called Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor supposedly scheduled for the first quarter of next year. Yesterday, word got out that the chip's price would sink from $851 at launch to $530 in the second quarter, but now HKEPC has learned that Intel will introduce an even cheaper quad-core chip in the third quarter of 2007.

Dubbed Core 2 Quad Q6400, the processor will reportedly have a 2.13GHz clock speed, 4MB of cache, and a 1066MHz front-side bus—equivalent to a pair of Core 2 Duo E6400s tacked together on the same package. The Q6400 will be based on the Kentsfield core and not on its 45nm successor, Yorkfield, which is also said to be coming in the third quarter of 2007. No price has leaked out for the Q6400, but HKEPC reckons it'll launch below $450.
